HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 2012/11/11 ? ?When I founded Yazino in 2009, 100% of people that I spoke to laughed about the opportunity I predicted,? says Yazino founder and CEO Hussein Chahine. ?And. now there are whole conferences dedicated to social casino and social gambling. I?m speaking in two just next week.? Chahine says his company?s aim has always been to be a massively multi-player social casino.

?Social gambling and online gambling are two separate but healthy industries,? says GEObet founder Gerry Gionet. ?Social gaming may sometimes offer casino games, but they are generally free and don?t offer prizes. Online gambling on the other hand is real gambling. We think that the best way to provide real gambling online is the same way they do it in casinos, in a controlled and regulated environment so that the players are protected.?

?We are involved is some fabulous businesses,? says partner Evan Hoff of the venture capital firm Velo Partners Limited. ?For example, Dragonplay is the leading poker app on the Android platform, offering free or ?freemium? entertainment to millions of poker enthusiasts. Others, like NYX Gaming are managing to offer their product to both online and land-based operators and are benefiting nicely from the convergence story.?

?Casino-style social gaming is the hottest thing in the social space at the moment,? says iGaming magazine Editor-in-Chief Michael Caselli, who is the organizer of the Social Gambling Conference. ?Revenues for casino-themed social games are around three times higher than the average social game, and that?s got everyone?s attention.?

The online gambling business has not been without risks. In 2006, U.S. senators Bill Frist, R-Tenn. and John Kyl, R-Ariz. banned online gambling by tacking the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act onto a port security bill. The law didn?t attack gamblers directly, rather made it illegal for banks to deal in online gambling proceeds. Party Poker, the world?s largest online site paid a $105 million fine and left the U.S. market to avoid prosecution. PokerStars, based on the Isle of Man, and another online operator Full Tilt in the UK?s Channel Islands, believed themselves beyond the reach of U.S. law. The Justice Department seized their U.S. assets on April 15th, 2011, an event known in the poker world as Black Friday.

?Online gambling is a market that is growing with regulation,? says Caselli. ?As more countries around the World and States within the U.S. license online gaming, more and more people get access to an online gaming site, view their advertising and have payment restrictions lifted from their credit cards. The market is currently a 40 billion dollar market and will one day be as important to bricks-and mortar casinos as their land-based businesses.?

?There are between 500 and 600 tribal casinos in America and each and everyone of these casinos is interested in taking their businesses online,? says Gionet, who aims to have GEObet bring together American Indian casinos under a single operational concept. ?Licensing and integration costs can reach into the $600K and higher to build it not including executive staffing. There are IGT, Microgaming, Playtech, NetEnt, PlayNGo to name a few who all have an array of casino games.? GEObet offers an integrated solution to bring casinos online.

?Building a regulated platform from the ground up requires huge amount of infrastructure,? says Chahine. ?Audit, KYC [Known Your Customer, a set of banking regulations] and various other considerations, in order to fully comply with gambling rules. The recent partnership of Zynga and Bwin-party shows that even the biggest social gaming developer with a successful suite of casino-style games is incapable of building its own gambling platform. At Yazino our multi-player platform, although we?ve focused purely on using it for social gaming so far, was wired for gambling from the beginning because we saw the future of the industry going this way some time ago.?

?For traditional online gambling operators, the main challenge is navigating the transition from what we call dot-com grey markets to regulated, more highly taxed markets,? says Hoff. ?On the social side, the primary challenge is scale. Many of those operators who are sub-scale are struggling, say 100k DAUs [Daily Active Users], even with good revenues per customer.?

Mobile is bringing new players to online and casinos are looking to online to expand their business. The most popular base for online gambling are locations that can services widely across Europe, such as Malta, and other ?white-list? jurisdictions such as Isle of Man.

Because many investors will not look at gambling due to regulatory issues or other concerns, valuations are not at the same level as the tech sector. ?Amazingly, we are still seeing new entrants, not from land-based or online casinos, entering the market, often with a mobile focus, and succeeding off a zero base,? says Hoff who will be at the conference looking for investments for Velo Partners. ?We will be looking at some new start-ups and business plans and it?s always exciting to see who is doing what, and what sort of innovation the sector can expect.?

Velo Partners looks at the whole gaming vertical from land-based to mobile to social, and from seed stage to mature businesses. They typically take a 10% to 25% stake in companies they invest.

?Convergence is happening right now on many levels,? says Hoff. ?Operators such as land-based iconic brand the Hippodrome Casino are launching integrated online offerings, while large suppliers like IGT have meaningful investments into both online technology and social gaming. It is difficult to categorize the convergence story as purely a competitive threat or a partnerships opportunity. It is both. The social gambling industry is somewhat different?new demographics, new product and new distribution channels are still driving sector-wide growth.?

The Social Gaming and Gambling Summit kicks off at 9am on Thursday, November 15th in London, with a presentation by Facebook Gaming Marketing Solutions specialist Owen O?Donoghue. The conference will come to Los Angeles on December 14th and 15th.

Disappear from the Internet forever

5 hrs.

Sick of horribly embarrassing things showing up when potential employers Google your name? Tired of everyone knowing you live in a garden level dungeon apartment? Perhaps you just don't like the fact the Internet makes you?easy to find. Thankfully, it's not that hard to delete yourself entirely. Here's how to do it.

For mildly famous (or infamous) individuals, disappearing is essentially impossible, but for the average person it's surprisingly easy. It just depends on much info is already out there.

Step 1: Delete your social network accounts

Chances are the first results that pop up on a Google search of your name are your social network profiles. This likely includes things like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and anywhere else you're using your real name. So, the first step to disappearing from the Internet is to remove these profiles.

If you just want to remove search results, you can set your?profiles to private, skip this step, and move on to step two. This isn't a perfect solution, but if you want to keep your social networks it will at least pull the results off the search engines. Here's how to delete your accounts on the big social networks:

Facebook: To delete your Facebook profile, head?to this link?while you're logged in, click the "Delete My Account" button, and you're done. The process might take up to 14 days before your profile is completely gone. Doing it this way deletes all of your data, and it cannot be reactivated.?

Some messages might still show up, but anything you've been tagged in will have your name removed (although the pictures themselves will remain). If you want those pictures removed completely, report that you didn't give permission for that photo under the?intellectual property tag on Facebook, or contact your friend directly and ask them to remove it.

Twitter: To delete your Twitter account, head?to your account settings page, and click "Deactivate my account" at the bottom. Your account gets deleted completely, but it will take a few weeks before results stop showing up in searches.

LinkedIn: To delete your LinkedIn account, head to your?settings page, click the "Account" icon, then the "close your account" link.

Google+: Google+ is a bit tricky because it's tied to your entire Google account. If you want to go ahead and close?everything?including email, calendars, and whatever else, sign into your primary?Google Account homepage, and chose "Close account and delete all services and info associated with it." This will get rid of everything from Gmail to Google Checkout. If you only need to ditch the Google+ account, follow?this link?and select "Delete Google+ content." This will remove your profile from Google+, but retain any other Google services you have.

You'll want to follow the above steps for any other social networks you use, forum accounts you have, or other sites you registered under your real name (this might include?Yelp,?Amazon,Quora, etc).?

If you have trouble remembering all your accounts,?Account Killer?has a huge list that includes direct links to deleting your profile from over 500 different sites. Your Google search for your name in the first step should also provide a guide to places you used your real name to create an account.

Step 2: Remove unwanted search results

Once you get rid of your social profiles, content is likely still floating around the web that you need to get rid of. They might be images, articles, or even employer websites. The first thing to do is figure out where you're showing up online in search results. Search?Google?and make a note (or bookmark) where you name shows up on web sites.

You essentially have one course of action to remove this content: contact the source directly. Email the web site hosting the content and politely ask them to remove it (or at least remove your name).?

A quick email works well for places like former employers who still haven't removed you from the employees list, family members who post pictures of you on their personal blogs, or even on donation pages for causes you've supported. In due time it will drop from search results.

After that, you can appeal to the search engines directly to remove the edited pages right away. You can do so through?Google,?Google Images, or?Bing?by filling out a simple form and requesting the URL to be indexed again. This doesn't always work, but it's worth a shot. You'll have a better chance if someone is publishing libelous content about you, breaking a copyright of any kind, or if a page is displaying confidential information about you.

If you cannot get everything off of your Google search results, you might also consider?burying personal data as far as possible. To do this while maintaining your vow to delete yourself from the Internet forever, create profiles on popular social sites like Twitter, Google+, or Facebook as well as landing pages like?About.Me?with just your name and no other details.?

You can also set up?your own website?filled with lots of?keywords about your name but no actual information?(or just create?a 410 error page and leave it at that). It's not as good as deleting content completely, but at least Internet sleuths will only be lead to a blank page with no information on you.

Step 3: Get rid of background check, criminal, and public record results

By now we've destroyed the bulk of your search results and social networks. But people can still run background checks and people searches on you very easily. It's time to destroy that personal data as best we can, and dig into various people databases. Here are a few worth checking:

Zabasearch: Zabasearch is mostly about finding addresses and phone numbers. Make a quick search of yourself and see what it knows.

Intelius: Intelius can perform background checks, hunt down criminal records, email addresses, social networks, and more. You have to pay to get your results, but you'll get a general idea of what's out there by simply searching your name.

Spokeo: Spokeo is essentially an address book and it can track you down?surprisingly?well to reveal your gender, age, phone number, address, relatives, marital status, and a whole lot more. Again, it costs a bit of money to get your full results, but you can get a general idea of what you need to snuff out.

Pipl: Pipl aggregates all of the above searches, but it's worth looking at to make sure no others have slipped through the cracks.

If you're anything like me (or my neighbor who I also tested this on), then you're probably a little surprised by the amount of information these databases have. Now it's time to get rid of as many of those as possible.

You have a couple different options for this. You can pay a service like?DeleteMe?$99 to go through and delete all these results. Or you can?follow DeleteMe's own guide to do it yourself.

The DIY method requires you contact around 25 different sites individually to remove the listings that include your address, phone number, income, marital status, current job, and everything else. Some sites are as simple as opting out through a link (Reddit has a greatcollection of the easy ones), while others require that you send in proof of identification and a letter.

Going through this step will help get rid of everything that comes in search results, but it will not remove your data completely. As long as information like your address and phone number are registered?somewhere, people will be able to find you. Going through the process of opting out of background checks, public records, and people search engines just makes that personal data harder to find.

Step 4: Remove any usernames attached to an email address with your name

Any good Internet sleuth will be able to link together your usernames on forums, web sites, and elsewhere with your email address. Subsequently, they'll eventually trace that back to your name.

The process to remove this data is dependent on the forums and sites you use. If you can, unlink your primary email address with your username whenever possible. If you're dealing with forums, ask the moderators to delete any posts that identify you personally. Essentially, cut any ties between your email address or name with your username. If you use the same username for every site, consider coming up with new names for every site.

Step 5: Stay off search engines without going offline by remaining anonymous

From here on out you'll have to remain vigilant in not releasing your information publicly. That means no social networks with your real name, and a yearly audit of the background check websites to ensure they don't have any new information on you.

Chances are you still want to use the Internet, right? In that case, you'll need to set up a few things to ensure your data stays locked down. That means creating a fake identity.

To do so, you can create an email address on a service like?Gmail?or?Outlook?with a pseudonym.Fake Name Generator?is a great way to come up with a new identity complete with birthdate, and everything else.

You can also use a?temporary email address for all your communications, and then use your new pseudonym and fake email address to sign up for any services you need. To keep your cell phone records private, you might also consider using?Google Voice?instead of going through a carrier since you can make up your Google Account name.

As for the rest of your browsing,?we've shown?you plenty?of ways?to keep your browsing anonymous before. This won't have an effect on any online searches for your name, but it will at least keep advertisers off your back.

When it boils down to it, the?Internet is forever?and truly resourceful people will always be able to find you. But if you take the steps outlined above, you'll at least thwart amateur Internet sleuths and regain a touch of privacy.

Schenck hires new boys basketball coach after resignation over ...

EAST MILLINOCKET, Maine ? Schenck High School has moved quickly to fill its boys varsity basketball coaching vacancy, naming Ron Weatherbee to the post this week.

Weatherbee, who in March stepped down after eight years as the girls varsity basketball coach at Lee Academy, replaces Steve LeVasseur, who opted last month not to return to the Schenck bench this winter after coaching the Wolverines? boys squad for 18 years.

Weatherbee, a Lincoln resident and director of that town?s recreation department, hadn?t planned on returning to the sidelines this winter until after learning of the Schenck vacancy.

?I got done at Lee last March, I just thought it was time, and then I never thought any more about coaching again until a week ago,? Weatherbee said. ?I talked with a couple of people in East Millinocket and heard there was a good group of kids there, both as gentlemen and athletes, and it seemed like it would be a good challenge for me.?

Weatherbee has coached basketball at various levels for more than 30 years, beginning his varsity coaching career in 1990 with four years coaching the girls squad at Lee Academy before a 10-year stint guiding the boys squad at Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln.

He subsequently coached girls varsity basketball for one year at Old Town and for eight more seasons at Lee, where he led the Pandas to four Eastern Maine championships and three state titles, the Class D crown in 2005 and 2007 and the Class C championship in 2008.

Weatherbee also had a successful run as Lee?s softball coach, leading that program to Eastern Maine championships in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007 and the Class D state title in 2006.

Weatherbee, who interviewed for the Schenck job last Friday and was approved by the local school board Tuesday evening, was one of ?multiple? candidates to fill the vacancy, according to Schenck athletic administrator John Montgomery.

?Ron brings a lot of experience to the job, which I?m very happy about,? said Montgomery.

LeVasseur?s decision not to return to coaching at his alma mater was related to a policy change that this year established a two-tiered pay structure for coaching stipends in which coaches who teach within the Schenck school system are paid at a higher rate than coaches like LeVasseur who come from outside the school system.

Under that structure, LeVasseur?s coaching stipend would have been reduced from $5,019 for the 2011-12 season to $3,510 for the 2012-13 season ? the latter amount just $183 more than LeVasseur said he was paid for his first season as a varsity basketball coach at Stearns of Millinocket in 1984.

LeVasseur has compiled a 333-152 record in 24 years as a head coach, including a 72-15 record and three state titles during four years as the girls varsity basketball coach at Schenck during the late 1980s and a 242-118 record with two state championships during his time with the Schenck boys.

The Schenck boys squad finished 7-12 last winter after advancing to the Eastern Maine Class D preliminary round.

NHL, union to meet Friday for 4th straight day

NEW YORK (AP) ? The best that can be said about the ongoing NHL labor negotiations is that they are still going, and will continue for at least a fourth straight day.

The league and the locked-out players' association got back together Thursday and accomplished enough over five-plus hours to make plans to meet again Friday.

"I am not going to discuss the negotiations or the substance of what we're talking about," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said Thursday on a wind-blown street corner. "I really don't think that would be helpful to the process.

"We have work to do, and my hope is that we can achieve the goal of getting a long-term, fair agreement in place as quickly as possible so we can play hockey."

Players' association executive director Donald Fehr didn't rule out talks stretching into the weekend, too.

"All I can tell you is we have been meeting, and we will be meeting again (Friday)," he said. "I can't say more than that. We haven't talked about (the weekend), but if there is something to talk about then I expect we will be."

The lockout reached its 54th day, and this week is considered critical for the season to be saved. The work stoppage is threatening to force the second cancellation of an NHL season in seven years.

Even if an agreement is reached soon, it isn't clear if any of this season's games that have been called off through Nov. 30 can be rescheduled. The NHL has already said a full 82-game season won't be played.

"Every day that passes, I think, is critical for the game and for our fans," Bettman said.

During a second consecutive day of marathon negotiations Wednesday, the players' association made an offer on revenue sharing, in which richer teams would help out poorer organizations, and another proposal regarding the "make-whole" provision that would guarantee full payment of all existing multiyear player contracts.

"There have been discussions over a wide range of topics," Fehr said, while occupying the same location on the street that Bettman did. "We're recessed for the night and we will be getting back together tomorrow. I am not going to comment in the substance of the discussions."

Fehr also declined to say if he felt progress was made in the latest long round of discussions at a Manhattan law firm ? the location of the negotiations that had been kept secret until Thursday.

"I am not going to characterize it except to say, as I have before, that its always better when you're meeting than when you're not," he said.

Thursday's discussions marked the fourth time in six days that face-to-face negotiations have taken place after both sides rejected proposals Oct. 18. The lockout, which began Sept. 16 after the collective bargaining agreement expired, has forced the cancellation of 327 regular-season games, including the New Year's Day Winter Classic in Michigan.

It was unclear if the NHL made counterproposals to offers it received from the union on Wednesday. The belief is that the players' association has agreed to a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenues, but that even division wouldn't kick in until the third year of the deal.

"Collective bargaining is a process, and it has peaks and valleys and ebbs and flows," Bettman said. "It is very tough to handicap."

It was also difficult for the NHL and the union to keep the location of the talks hidden. On Thursday it was revealed that negotiations were being conducted at the law offices of Proskauer Rose ? the firm of NHL lead counsel Bob Batterman.

Revenue sharing and the make-whole provision are major hurdles in the way of making a deal. On Wednesday, the sides spent more than five hours dealing with the most contentious areas. Coupled with the more than seven hours they spent negotiating Tuesday, owners and players were together about 13 hours this week before reconvening Thursday.

There is clearly still much to be done to work out the differences to reach a deal that will allow the already delayed and shortened season to begin.

Along with a handful of team owners, eight players attended Wednesday's talks, five fewer than Tuesday. Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby and others left New York to try to avoid the impending snowstorm that hit the area, the union said.

On Thursday, seven players were in attendance, according to the NHLPA, and at least three owners.

In October, the players' association responded to an NHL offer with three of its own, but all of those were quickly dismissed by the league. That led to nearly three weeks without face-to-face discussions, although the parties kept in regular contact by phone.

Both sides have made proposals that included a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenues. The NHL has moved toward the players' side in the "make-whole" provision and whose share of the economic pie that money will come from.

Along with the split of hockey-related revenue and other core economic issues, contract lengths, arbitration and free agency also must be agreed upon.

The union accepted a salary cap in the previous labor pact, which wasn't reached until after the entire 2004-05 season was canceled because of a lockout. The union doesn't want to absorb the majority of concessions this time after the NHL had record revenue that exceeded $3 billion last season.

300-year-old manual tried to help deaf speak

A 300-year-old, leather-bound instruction manual contains some of the earliest examples of attempts to teach the deaf to communicate.

The manual belonged to Alexander Popham, a deaf teenager from a noble English family who was taught to speak in the 1660s. The leather-bound notebook was discovered in 2008 at a stately English manor called Littlecote House.

The finding suggests that one of the boy's tutors, John Wallis, was a few hundred years ahead of his time in understanding that deaf people needed their own language to communicate, said linguist David Cram of the University of Oxford.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Climate issue heats up after superstorm

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: The climate change issue has been virtually a non-issue during the presidential campaign ? but it's primed to take a higher profile after the elections, in part due to Hurricane Sandy's horrific aftermath.

    2. How to cope with lab-animal tragedy
    3. Elephant can speak Korean ? out loud
    4. Bulgaria claims to find Europe's oldest town

Cram is presenting his findings at a Royal Society lecture Nov. 9 in London.

Wallis also likely made use of a rudimentary method of sign language, Cram said.

"Wallis made the point that in order to teach a deaf person our language, the language of the hearing, we had to learn their language," Cram told LiveScience. "He certainly would have made use of sign language and also of a writing system."

At the time, men who were mute were deemed incompetent and not allowed to inherit property or make wills.

"The tradition going back to the Middle Ages was that deafness and dumbness went together," Cram said. "If you couldn't teach people to speak, you wouldn't be able to teach them to communicate."

In order to preserve young Popham's social status, his family asked two Renaissance Men of the period, Wallis and William Holder, to teach him to speak.

Amazingly, Popham learned to communicate and speak (although historical records don't reveal how well), became a minor celebrity of the era and was even presented at court, Cram said. He eventually married the daughter of one of the leading intellectual women of the 17th century.

In later years, Wallis and Holder disputed who should get credit for teaching Popham to speak. While Holder was the first to tutor Popham and may have first coaxed the boy to say words, there's no doubt that Wallis was the one who taught Popham to use those words to communicate, Cram said.

"It's not clear that Holder was doing anything more than trying to get someone to produce words parrot-fashion," Cram said.

After Holder left his job as Popham's tutor, Wallis took his place.

The small, leather-bound manual written by Wallis reveals that he understood that deaf people could communicate and that speaking was separate from communicating ? in other words, being able to produce sounds doesn't mean you can make yourself understood. Nor is speech the only way to communicate. The book contains detailed explanations of vocal articulation, but also figures and signs and exercises in phonetics, syntax and sentence construction.

"Wallis made the point that a really profoundly deaf person will need to be taught to communicate before they articulate," he said.

Wallis wasn't the first person to experiment with signs. Hundreds of years earlier, Benedictine monks who took a vow of silence also developed their own primitive sign language, which formed the basis of later attempts in Spain to teach the deaf to sign, Cram said.

Tax hike for wealthy Americans won't kill growth: CBO

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Allowing income tax rates to rise for wealthy Americans, and maintaining rates for the less affluent, would not hurt U.S. economic growth much in 2013, the Congressional Budget Office said on Thursday, stepping into a dispute between Republicans and Democrats over how to resolve the so-called "fiscal cliff."

The report by the authoritative non-partisan arm of Congress is expected to fuel President Barack Obama's demand for higher taxes on the rich, part of his proposal to avoid the full impact of the expiring tax cuts and across-the-board spending reductions set to begin in early 2013 unless Congress acts.

Republicans argue that any tax increases would be devastating to the economy, particularly to small businesses, and to U.S. employment rates.

They have held firm to their position that none of the cuts, which originated during the administration of President George W. Bush, should be allowed to expire.

The CBO said the tax hikes for the wealthy would reduce job growth by around 200,000 jobs, much less than the 700,000 in job losses claimed by Republican Speaker of the House John A. Boehner.

Obama has also stuck to his position, with the White House reiterating on Thursday that the president sees his election victory on Tuesday as an endorsement by voters of his view on higher taxes for the affluent.

"One of the messages that was sent by the American people throughout this campaign is ... (they) clearly chose the president's view of making sure that the wealthiest Americans are asked to do a little bit more in the context of reducing our deficit in a balanced way," senior White House adviser David Plouffe said.

UNCERTAINTY SCARING MARKETS

The disagreement over the tax cuts is a major roadblock to any agreement in Congress, as it is coupled with the spending issues also on the table.

The lack of progress in ending the standoff is spooking global markets, which fell again Thursday in part because of political uncertainty in Washington.

The concern was underscored by the credit rating agency, Standard & Poor's, which said on Thursday it sees an increasing chance that the U.S. economy will go over the cliff next year. But it also said it expects policymakers will probably compromise in time to avoid that outcome.

Analysts at the agency see about a 15 percent chance that political brinkmanship will push the world's largest economy over the fiscal cliff.

With only five days remaining before the U.S. Congress begins its post-election session, top political leaders in Washington provided little new assurance Thursday that they can act in time.

In an interview with ABC Television's Diane Sawyer, Boehner repeated what he has been saying for two years: "Raising tax rates is unacceptable. ... Frankly, it couldn't even pass the House. I'm not sure it could pass the Senate," he said, according to a transcript provided by the network.

The Democratic White House did not respond publicly to an initiative launched on Wednesday by Boehner to get talks going to avoid the cliff. The president is scheduled to make a statement on the economy Friday.

In the absence of concrete developments, the CBO report became the focus of argument Thursday. Reports by the CBO are designed to assist Congress in making difficult fiscal decisions, but they are also used by partisans to bolster their own arguments.

A statement from the Republican-controlled House Ways and Means Committee said the CBO report "confirms that raising taxes on all taxpayers will result in fewer ?help wanted' signs hanging in the windows of businesses across the country. Job creators agree, and have made it clear, that raising taxes will result in a weaker economy and fewer jobs for the millions of Americans struggling to find work."

Democratic Rep. Chris Van Hollen, ranking member of the House Budget Committee, said the report "underscores the need to prevent the so-called fiscal cliff from harming American families and businesses, and to instead enact a balanced, long-term deficit reduction plan."

The term "balanced" plan is the Democratic code for tax increases.

The tax cuts were enacted during the Bush administration, but were made temporary, in part to reduce the appearance of exploding the already soaring U.S. deficit over the long term.

They were extended in 2010 for two years under an agreement between Republicans and Obama, after Republicans swept the mid-term elections that year and took control of the House.

That extension is running out, just as the trigger date arrives for automatic spending cuts Congress approved in 2011 as part of a deal to avoid a default on U.S. government debt.

VARIOUS SCENARIOS

The report from CBO laid out the economic effects of a number of options that lawmakers will consider as they deal with the fiscal cliff events.

The CBO said extending all of the tax cuts would boost U.S. gross domestic product growth next year by a little less than 1.5 percentage points.

If the tax rates were extended only for individuals earning less than $200,000 and couples earnings less than $250,000, CBO said, growth would rise by 1.25 percent.

Wall Street estimates show third-quarter GDP growth was 2.8 percent. Unemployment is currently at 7.9 percent.

Eliminating the automatic spending cuts to military and domestic programs would add back 0.75 percentage points of growth, as would extending an expiring payroll tax cut and long- term unemployment benefits that are expected to end next year, the CBO said.

But the office also warned of the consequences of taking such actions without reducing deficits that have run at $1 trillion in each of the past four years.

"CBO expects that even if all of the fiscal tightening was eliminated, the economy would remain below its potential and the unemployment rate would remain higher than usual for some time," the report said.

Correctly Fitting A Horse's Saddle : Sports and Recreation

You are here: Home / Equestrian / Correctly Fitting A Horse?s Saddle

Speaking in awfully broad terms, the most popular saddles in use are either of the English or the Western style. However , even within these broad classes there are many sub-divisions. Apart from these two, there are also Australian and endurance saddles. Someone with any idea of the world of horses will be able to distinguish an English from a Western saddle at first sight. These saddle types come in variations designed for explicit riding preferences, events and riders.

The essential features of a western saddle are a horn and a high form in front. The saddle is also deep of seat, with a cantle of variable height comprising the rear. The skirt on western saddles is extremely distinct, and the stirrups and fenders are long and wide. They also are ornately carved and decorated most of the time.

English saddles weigh much less than western saddles. They?re definitely simpler and more functional. They?re distinguished by flat seats, with no horn or visible fork. The front of the English saddle is correctly known as the pommel. The cantle at rear is somewhat thin and like the cantles on western saddles, may vary in height. The skirts and fenders of the western saddle are replaced on the English saddle by ?flaps?, which stay close to the body of the pony. Stirrups are minimally styled and attached to the saddle by thin leather strips. English saddles come in designs that differ from the most well-liked pleasure version, the hunt seat, to the more specialised dressage and show saddles. These latter saddles need to satisfy certain factors to qualify for use in competition. Endurance saddles and Australian saddles mix features of both western and English saddles. In the recent past, they have increased in popularity with riders who otherwise use both English and western saddles, because they are strong and durable, yet really light and practical.

Whatever saddle you use, your first concern must be correct fit first for the horse and then for the rider. Using badly fitted saddles is risking sores on the horse, and even making the horse allergic to being ridden. As a matter of general measurement guidelines, you measure the widest stretch of the part of the horse?s back that takes the saddle and confirm any saddle you buy corresponds to that measurement on the inside. It?s best that you try out a new saddle on your pony before purchasing it, if it is brand new or secondhand. According to pros, you try out the fit by seeing if three of your fingers slip in comfortably between the saddle?s front, the pommel and your horse?s withers. This leads to a correct fit: if there?s further space, the saddle is too big and if the three fingers fail to go in nicely, the saddle isn?t big enough.

If you find the cinch to be too short to go around the girth, just get a longer one. This doesn?t have anything to do with the saddle?s fit across the horse?s back. Continually check your horse?s back to confirm that the horse isn?t being subject to uneven or unjustified pressure arising from a badly fitted saddle. Look for areas that show unwarranted friction or dry spots within the otherwise swetty area beneath the saddle.
