Mayor Bloomberg Declares War On Baby Formula

Latch On NYC Breastfeeding Campaign (credit: NYC Health Dept.)

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Mayor Michael Bloomberg has banned smoking in New York City parks and is trying to ban the sale of sugary drinks over 16 oz. But he already has his sights on his next target: baby formula.

WCBS 880?s Alex Silverman On The Story

Latch On NYC is a citywide initiative to support mothers who choose to breastfeed and limit practices that interfere with that choice.

It begins September 3, but ads are already on the subways.

LINK: Latch On NYC (Health Dept. Site)

The mayor said Monday that all the big public health people agree with him.

He said they say it?s a great idea because breast milk is just better.

?The immunities that a mother has built up get passed on to the child,? he told reporters.

Hospitals choosing to be part of the city program will keep formula bottles hidden and carefully controlled to encourage breastfeeding.

?We?re not making anybody do it. We?re suggesting, and the same thing with full sugar drinks,? the mayor said. ?I was behind a truck this morning, and they said ?Don?t limit our drinks.? Nobody?s limiting. It?s just the size of the cup.?

Mothers will still be allowed to have formula, but will have to request it, won?t get it for free, and hospital staff will have to sign it out.

The National Alliance for Breastfeeding Advocacy has come out in support of the mayor?s plan, and hopes to get more hospitals on board.

From smoking to soda to baby formula? one reporter wanted to know what?s next.

?Anything that we can think of that will improve your health,? he said.

Where do you stand on the mayor?s initiative? Sound off in the comments section below.

Native screenshot feature for Windows Phone 8 confirmed by emulator

While we found many features worth noting in our review of Windows Phone 7.5, one that was missing (and near to our hearts as people who review phones) was the ability to easily take screenshots on the devices. Thankfully, that issue appears to be resolved in Windows Phone 8, as WP7App.de has dug deep into the emulator (video evidence after the break) and confirmed the feature exists, enabled by clicking the Start and Camera button at the same time. That should make our lives easier and, for most, let them share snaps of their phone of choice's tile setup and inevitable autocorrect mistakes.

Making your own beer for fun not profit | Batch-22

One of Papazian's homebrewing books

One of Papazian?s homebrewing books (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I sent this to the Lake County Record-Bee in hopes of it becoming a regular feature called The Brew Note.

Hello ladies, how are you? Fantastic. Does your man look like me? No. Can he make beer like me? Yes. If your guy can make instant oatmeal, he can make you a beer with more flavor than chocolate. In fact, he can make you a beer with chocolate in it. Or, if you like, you can do it yourself and not break the bank.

If you are tired of the same-old same-old beer, you know what I mean: beer whose only taste is ?fizzy.? Then you are ready for craft beer. And, one of the best things about craft beer is you can make great tasting handcrafted beer yourself. And you will gather friends to help you drink your beer.

Here are some reasons to brew your own beer:

  1. You can be creative. If you want chocolate and haba?ero chiles in your beer, you can make your beer with chocolate and haba?ero chiles. You can make light or dark?or pink beer, if that lights your candle.
  2. You will know exactly what is in your beer because you made it. Nothing you want left out is in and nothing you want in is left out.
  3. It is simple to do. We humans have been making beer for as long as we have been growing grains. When you brew, you connect with a tradition that is thousands of years old. That?s downright ennobling, ain?t it?
  4. It?s pretty cheap to make. No expensive high-tech equipment is needed. You need a pot to boil in and a container (such as a food-grade bucket with airtight lid and airlock) to ferment in.
  5. Beer is honest. Beer doesn?t lie to you (unless you drink too many?then it lies like a cheap rug). If your beer has a problem, it tells you (it never says, ?If you don?t know what the problem is then I?m not going to tell you either!?). Homebrewed beer gives you honest feedback as to whether you did it correctly.
  6. When you homebrew, you will learn the secret handshake that all homebrewers around the world know that gets them free beer at all places that serve good beer. [Okay, I made that one up. But, I have told a brewpub?s waitstaff that I?m a homebrewer and have been invited back to see the brewing equipment and have been given samples to try.]
  7. Good people drink good beer. If you are interested in trying, there is help available for brewing. There is a club dedicated to brewing good beer here in Lake County that meets at 6pm on the third Monday of each month at Guido?s Pizza in Kelseyville. They love talking about beer and how to make it and how to make it better. They don?t talk politics, religion, gossip, or current events; it is all about the beer.

What does it take to get started brewing beer? That?s for next time. For now, ?Relax,? as the Godfather of homebrewing, Charlie Papazian advises, ?don?t worry, have a homebrew? (or a store-bought craft beer if there?s no homebrew around).

My name is Norm Benson and I'm currently researching and writing a biography of Walter C. Lowdermilk. In addition to being a writer, I'm an avid homebrewer. I'm also a registered professional forester in California with thirty-five years of experience. My background includes forest management, fire fighting, law enforcement, teaching, and public information. Remote camera mounts replace AFP photographers at Olympic Games

AFP photographers kit out robots for the Olympic games with Nikon D4s

Remember those robotic camera rigs Reuters cooked up for the Olympic games? They won't be alone -- the AFP have lined the games with their own remote mounts. Traditionally, aerial shots are captured by brave, well harnessed photographers -- but the AFP's acrobatic photojournalists have been grounded by the powers that be. "The Olympics Committee has warned us that, for security reasons, no photographer will be allowed on the stadium roof," stated the AFP's chief editor of technical issues, Francois-Xavier Marit. "We had to come up with a system of remote-controlled photography." Marit worked with Nikon and Mark Roberts Motion Control to build a dozen rigs to pepper throughout Olympic facilities. It's not Marit's first time kitting out the games either -- he's been using remote camera rigs to snap underwater Olympians since 2004. Each mount is equipped with a Nikon D4 and 16 to 400mm zooms, ten will be mounted in the main Olympic stadium with an additional two covering the swimming complex. Worried you won't be able to see the hardware from the bleachers? Mosey on past the break for a quick preview.

PFT: Holmgren's future in Cleveland still cloudy

nfl_g_snoopdog_400Getty Images

Jets rookie WR Stephen Hill is drawing praise for doing a lot of what he likely will be doing this year:? blocking.

Pats WR Donte? Stallworth returns to New England having ?matured as a player, matured as a person.?? (Killing a guy while driving a car under the influence tends to do that.)

The goal for getting a new lease in place for the Bills officially has been moved to the end of the year.

When it comes to hairstyles, Dolphins rookies are sporting the modified Cruella deVille.

With WR Antonio Brown and not WR Mike Wallace getting a new contract from the Steelers, Snoop Dogg may need an explanation.

Browns DT Ahtyba Rubin is recovering from a procedure to repair a slight pelvic tear.

Bengals LB Brandon Joiner is on the reserve/did not report list for a good reason; he?s serving a three-year prison sentence in Texas.? (Shouldn?t they have traded him to the Lions by now?)

Is Michael Oher finally ready to play left tackle?? (With Bryant McKinnie AWOL, it may not matter.)

The Jaguars have released FB Naufahu Tahi.? (Brad Childress wants to know why they didn?t they just make him the extra man on the roster.)

Colts coach Chuck Pagano?s first training camp as head coach opens on Saturday.

Titans QB Matt Hasselbeck put business first in the offseason; ?I played it more safe and I didn?t really travel,? Hasselbeck said. ?I didn?t really go anywhere for fun.? Everywhere I went, I had a purpose.? If I was going somewhere, then throwing and working out was priority No. 1 all the time.?

Texans LB Connor Barwin has traded in the Cosmo Kramer for the Gary Kubiak.

A jury has awarded $5.2 million against Chargers doctor David Chao for prescribing a cold-therapy device after knee surgery; Chao has now been on the wrong end of multiple malpractice cases.? (But, please, keep letting him provide care to elite professional athletes.)

Broncos LB Von Miller thinks that the team?s seventh defensive coordinator in seven seasons is ?laid back?; Jack Del Rio says Miller and the rest of the defense are in for a surprise.

The Torn ACL Trio (Eric Berry, Jamaal Charles, Tony Moeaki) all practiced for the Chiefs on Friday; ?I feel I?ve got my swag back,? Charles said.

Here are five questions for the Raiders.

Our old pal (and former PFT contributor) Tim MacMahon of ESPNDallas.com tears into Cowboys WR Dez Bryant for keeping his mouth shut in the wake of his recent arrest.

Giants co-owner John Mara was surprised by the number of media at training camp: ??I can?t believe so many of you are here.? Tebow isn?t here.?

Former Redskins QB Colt Brennan has been arrested in Hawaii for suspicion of drunk driving and drug possession.

Eagles TE Brent Celek (knee) is expected to miss only a few days.

A lawsuit against former Vikings WR and current ESPN analyst Cris Carter involving a rap-song investment gone bad contends that Carter was close to becoming the Alabama receivers coach in 2011.? (It?s unknown whether Carter ever declared, ?I?m not going to be the Alabama receivers coach.?)

Bears K Robbie Gould thinks it would be a ?big risk? for the team to let LB Brian Urlacher become a free agent.? (It also would be a ?big risk? for the Bears to make personnel decisions based on the advice of a kicker.)

Packers LT Marshall Newhouse is gaining confidence via praise from his coach ? and practice against LB Clay Matthews.

Lions WR Calvin Johnson apparently can?t walk down the street in Mexico.? (Sergio Mendes can sympathize.)

Newly re-signed Falcons LB Mike Peterson is now known as ?Unc?; ?I?m everybody?s uncle around here now,? Peterson said.

Saints CB Patrick Robinson made the play of the day on Friday, stealing a Drew Brees pass away from TE Jimmy Graham.

Falcons RB Jason Snelling wants more opportunities on offense.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera hopes increased competition will create increased urgency in training camp; among other things, both kicking positions are up for grabs.

The mentor of 49ers LB Aldon Smith says that his off-field problems will be a ?small blip on his radar.?? (If getting stabbed twice is a small blip on the radar, that?s a big-ass radar.)

The Cardinals are holding their annual Red-White Scrimmage on Saturday.? (QB Kevin Kolb may want to wear ear plugs.)

Rams TE Michael Hoomanawanui is able to practice after suffering a torn ACL on November 13.

Will the Seahawks quarterback competition be reduced from three to two?? ?The answer is yes, I guess,? coach Pete Carroll said.? ?You?re just going to have to suck it up and wait.?

DIY Keyboard Controller Built for Serious Online Gaming - How-To ...

This build is a Frankensteinish mixture of parts from computer mice, game controllers, and more?but the end result is a polished and plug-and-play controller suitable for a wide range of games.

The build comes to us courtesy of DIYer Gabe and his quest to build the ultimate controller for playing MMO and other computer games. Here?s his list of noteworthy features on the second version of his project:

  • USB plug and play. Universally works with any PC game.
  • Optical 1600 DPI trackball mouse, with backlit scroll wheel.
  • Screw in detachable analog stick for the D-pad. Great for games like WoW or anything where all you do is hold forward (W) for hours.
  • D-pad uses mouse micro switches for a quick, light, tactile response. I love this D-pad. Every D-pad should use these switches.
  • Both triggers, as well as the left and right bumpers use mouse micro switches as well.
  • Keyboard has all PC functions, and is backlit for playing at night.
  • 10 foot long braided USB cord. Long enough for using in the living room to play games with a huge TV. It also doesn?t tangle which is sweet.
  • No hot glue! Everything has it?s own custom made board with screwposts. This way it is easily serviceable should someone get nacho bits in the buttons.

For more information about the build including plenty of pictures and a parts list, hit up the link below.

Making Easy Child Friendly Home Improvements | articlereference.net

The homes with the most updates are the ones that frequently sell faster. One of the most profitable decisions that you can make is to update and remodel your home prior to sale. It will make prospective buyers feel that there is a minimal amount of work to be done after the purchase.

Consider hiring a professional landscaper to help you design a beautiful garden for your front yard. You can decide how much maintenance and effort you are willing to put into the upkeep, and he or she can suggest plants and flowers that will allow you to meet that goal.

An extremely simple way to improve your home is to change out your air filters. Not only do allergens and dust creep into your air ducts when the filter is too clogged, but the efficiency of your system can be brought down by neglecting to change the filters. This is very important to do often if you have pets in the house.

Upgrade your thermostat to a programmable model designed to regulate temperature based on occupancy to make a comfortable improvement to your home. These easy to install thermometers allow you to set the temperature differently throughout the day based on preference and occupancy. For example, you can reduce the heat during the day when the home is empty or outside temperatures increase.

Exterior lighting will give you peace of mind at night, and add beauty to your landscaping. Consider motion sensor lighting, as this will reduce the amount of energy used when the outdoors are not occupied, and can also frighten away unwanted animals or even prowlers. Install the lights in strategic places, such as the exact area visible to you from a window, and the path from your vehicle to the front door.

If your rooms are looking rough because of nicks and dents in your wall, then you should try putting toothpaste in the hole to patch it up. Toothpaste can fill small nicks easily and can keep your room looking great. This is a cheap alternative and a quick fix.

If there are a lot of repairs that need to be done to a home before you can move it you should worry about getting the heavy repairs done first. Smaller projects like updating bathrooms, finishing basement areas, and changing the color of the pain can be done a little at a time after you have already moved in.

If you?re thinking about doing home improvement work, get a home inspection first. If you?ve owned your home for at least a decade there may be some damage that could affect the safety of your home. Have a home inspector come through and check your entire house, then pay for any repairs before you spend all your money on improvements.

To prevent air from escaping through your doors, buy draft excluders and sealant strips. Draft excluders fit underneath a door and stop hot air from leaking out and cold air from leaking in. Sealant strips fit around door frames and do the same function. They can be found at any hardware store.

Home improvement could become your new hobby: it saves you a lot of money when you consider how much you can do to improve your home. These tips should help you get started or get new ideas. Remember that home improvement should either be fun or save you money. Consider this before you start a new project.

For the very best construction springfield mo you?ll want to take your time and choose the right company for you.

Comprehending Small Business Internet Marketing: Dos and Don'ts ...

Website marketing has become one of the very most popular techniques in advertising. Both start-up and big firms make use of this as it presents many benefits conventional advertising may not offer. The competition becomes fiercer as more firms use Website marketing methods. As a result, it is recommended to understand the basics.

Below are a few dos and don'ts in Internet marketing for small business: ?

Do comprehend the basic principles

Fully familiarize yourself with the basic principles of Website marketing. Carry out research on famous internet promotion methods. Read about the various types of small business Internet marketing. Figure out which of these competing firms often utilize. ?

Try and read about search engine optimisation, social media advertising, search engine marketing, as well as email marketing.? Select from one of these-it might be better to concentrate on one method before trying out numerous methods together.

Apply the strategy to your business and review its effectiveness; don't leap from one strategy to another, as this may only lead to failure.

Do make your web site simple

A website is a crucial element in Internet marketing for small business. Therefore, develop one which has user-friendly features. Plan the design meticulously. Pick out colours which are satisfying to the eyes; avoid the use of the same colour for the texts and also the backdrop. Ensure that customers can certainly navigate through your site-include navigation keys at the very top and bottom part of the site to make browsing easier.

Refrain from putting a ridiculous amount of graphics, as these might make the site longer to load.

You should also avoid putting a lot of information in a webpage. Provide links to the homepage to make navigating a lot easier for visitors. Ensure that the web site provides the important information regarding your business.

Do compose appropriate content and weblogs

Content is important too in small business Internet marketing. Possessing original and pertinent content material helps increase your search rankings in search engines. Search spiders can track key phrases within your copy and will include your web site in their database. Make sure to write useful and engaging content.

You can also write weblogs to enhance your search rankings. The advantage of writing blogs is search engines like google can track these in the event you update them consistently. People also are inclined to go through weblogs, specifically if you authored intriguing topics.

Avoid the use of black hat SEO

Lots of people will do whatever it takes to get higher rankings-some use black hat SEO. Although black hat SEO is not illegal, it is unethical and has severe consequences. Search engines might ban your website if you use these techniques. Therefore, you should avoid using black hat SEO for small business Internet marketing. Make sure you comply with the terms and conditions provided by search engines. Avoid keyword stuffing, cloaking, and automatic article submissions.

Never publish long messages

Posting long responses or messages may make your web visitors lose interest. Keep your messages, comments, or articles short whenever you can. Get straight away to the point if you are making an announcement in your website. It could also be better to include a call-to-action link to encourage your web visitors. Produce a good copy that can deliver the message briefly.

Emily Maynard to Change Last Names, Maybe Get Married on Television

Emily Maynard and Jef Holm continued their media blitz today, appearing on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM morning radio show and making a couple announcements.

First, Maynard will soon be Emily Holm.

"Even though I went on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, I'm pretty traditional, believe it or not, so yeah - sure [I'll change my name]," the beautiful single mother said.

Jef and Emily

Holm then reiterated his plans to relocate to North Carolina and could not have sounded more excited over the couple's future.

"Every chance I get to see her and hang out with her, I take advantage of that," he gushed to Seacrest. "She's seriously the sweetest girl ever."

Finally, what about the rumor that Emily and Jef will pull a Molly and Jason Mesnick and get married on TV?

"People keep asking us that, and we don't even know what we're going to eat for lunch tomorrow," Maynard said. "I never thought I was going to be the Bachelorette, so I've learned to never say never. But it's something we'll have to talk about as a family."

In other words: if the money is right...

Forced to think about families of Holmes, Paterno, and Sandusky

An Internet avalanche of wrath uncovers a sexual predator and enlightens a blogger about remembering the "other" victims ? the families of Holmes, Paterno, and Sandusky.

By Lisa Suhay,?Correspondent / July 25, 2012

Dorothy Sandusky, wife of former Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, center, arrives at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte, Pa., on June 19, 2012. Jerry Sandusky was charged with 51 counts of child sexual abuse involving 10 boys over a period of 15 years.

After the news of both the NCAA decision on the Penn State pedophile and Colorado massacre hit in the same week, we were so upset that most folks didn't really waste time wondering what the families of the bad guys must be feeling. Because so much compassion is expended for the dead and wounded, there isn?t much feeling left for the families of those who committed the evil act itself.

My July 23 Modern Parenthood blog on the NCAA ruling prompted a left-field response that blew my mind and prompts me to think more about the families of criminals.

In the blog, I lashed out at those at Penn State who knew about former coach Jerry Sandusky's acts as a pedophile and sex offender. And instantly, I was targeted by members of a Missouri community who linked a sex offender there with a donor to my children's chess charity. Suddenly my chess blog and YouTube videos ? part of the nonprofit organization Norfolk Initiative for Chess Excellence (NICE) ? were slammed with outraged comments revealing that a donor to the nonprofit is a sex offender.

It was all news to me.

My best guess on how this connection was made is that people who were aware of the man?s convictions tended to look for stories slamming pedophiles and sex offenders, and it wasn?t a big leap from my Monitor blog to my chess blog and videos, which are prominently featured in the donor?s home state of Missouri where he sold brightly colored and patterned chess boards for children.

While most people might not think of chess as a child's playground, more than half of the 45 million Americans who play chess are children playing in schools and community centers. The Glos company, which donated the chessboards to my organization, was trying to strike deals with major school systems as well as the Boy Scouts which created a chess merit badge last August. So this is a very big deal to this little company.

I have never met James C. Walker in person, nor his wife Laura. It is she who owns and operates Glos Games, while he designed boards and did marketing and sales. I am told he no longer has any contact with the company.

After a series of phone calls a year ago, Laura and I became friends. Jimmy and his larger-than-life persona over the phone irritated me so badly that I just stopped dealing with him, except on rare occasions when Laura wasn't available.

Things To Think About When Considering Bankruptcy | Articles ...

If you are in a financial position where declaring bankruptcy is imminent, never put off declaring. When you wait, your financial situation is likely to continue to deteriorate and prove even more devastating. For this reason, when the financial hole that you have dug is too deep, it is smart to file sooner, rather than later.

Once you determined that you want to file for bankruptcy, it is important that you figure out which kind is best for you to file. For instance, with Chapter 7 most of your debts will be relieved, and you can keep certain aspects. With Chapter 13 your debt gets reconstructed, and you are given a certain amount of time to pay it off.

Don?t be afraid to apply for credit for purchases such as a new home or car just because you have a recently discharged bankruptcy. Many lenders will take your new financial situation into account. They may be more likely to loan money to someone who has no debt due to a bankruptcy than to the person with, say, 75,000 dollars in credit card debt. The fact that you have no monthly credit card payments can make you look like a better risk.

Become educated about personal bankruptcy. You must realize that the IRS will tax forgiven debt in a bankruptcy. The rules can be confusing, so be sure you learn all that you can before you file. You can find out more about this by doing some research, either by talking to finance professionals or looking online.

A good personal bankruptcy tip is to obviously be as honest as possible when you file for bankruptcy. Some people try to take advantage of the system by committing bankruptcy fraud, but they forget that by signing the dotted line, they?re under oath. You don?t want to deal with the consequences of bankruptcy fraud.

Consider hiring an attorney to help you. The laws surrounding personal bankruptcy can be complex at best and confusing and convoluted at worst. If you feel unsure of how to go about moving forward, consulting with an attorney may be the best move you can make. An attorney can be the guiding hand you need to make the process as smooth as possible.

A good personal bankruptcy tip is to make sure that you always have an up-to-date credit report on hand, when you?re thinking about filing for bankruptcy. You don?t want any surprises, and any hidden errors that you overlooked can seriously hamper your efforts and can, potentially, get your bankruptcy denied.

Make sure that you pay all of your bills on time, since this will contribute to 35 percent of what is on your credit report. This looks good if you are trying to rebuild your credit after you have had to file for bankruptcy. Making on-time payments will increase your credit score.

Learn from it. Bankruptcy is a great chance for a fresh start. However, bankruptcy is not the end of problems. You must remember to use the fresh start to begin re-building your credit and learning how to budget and spend wisely. You can find a course either online or through the court to help with this.

Seriously consider if bankruptcy is the right choice for you. If you do not owe too much in credit card debt and medical bills, you might be able to handle the debts yourself with credit counselors and payment arrangements. Bankruptcy can be a serious financial choice, so make sure you consider all your options carefully.

In recent years, the topic of personal bankruptcy has taken on increased significance, as a result of the financial crisis. An incredible amount of discussion and debate has centered around how, when and why an individual consumer might consider filing a bankruptcy petition. Investing the time necessary to sift through the noise and educate yourself about the process can be the smartest financial decision you can make. Apply the concepts in this article to your circumstances, and you may be able to begin anew with a clean financial slate.

SFL: Talks resume between newco Rangers and football chiefs over SFA membership

Charles Green, rangers

RANGERS newco will continue talks with the football authorities today as their bid to gain membership of the SFA remains up in the air.

There are two obstacles in the way of Charles Green's club signing the agreement with the SFA, which has as a condition the acceptance of a 12-month transfer ban originally handed out to Rangers oldco for bringing the game into disrepute - media rights and the possible stripping of trophies from Ibrox.

SFL chief executive David Longmuir revealed he will assess any offer from the SPL for the rights to Rangers games in the Third Division next season. It is believed broadcasters are not keen to sign up to an SPL deal without having access to the Govan club's games.

If SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster was unable to bring Rangers' rights to the negotiating table, the SFL could lose out on their annual ?2million settlement fee that was agreed in 1999 when the top clubs split from the league to form the SPL.

It is also believed that several top-flight clubs could face financial problems if there is any reduction or delay in the routine ?645,000 payment from the SPL, which is expected on August 6.

Before signing the membership agreement with the SFA, the Ibrox club want the SPL to drop their investigation into alleged dual contracts.

There has to be a five-way agreement between the SFA, SPL, SFL, old Rangers and new Rangers before any deal is sanctioned. And, with Ally McCoist's men due to play their first match against Brechin in the Ramsdens Cup next weekend, time is running out.

The SFL's media agents, IMG, have invited bids from interested parties with today being the deadline and Press Association Sport understands the SPL will be one of the bidders.

Longmuir said: "We will look at the options we have on Monday and Tuesday.

"If the SPL happen to be one of the bidders we will assess that as well. They are at liberty to pitch to us as anyone else.

"I am comfortable that we will get there this week."

The SPL want an independent commission to rule on whether the Govan club breached regulations with alleged undisclosed payments to players between 2001 and 2010.

Rangers fear an adverse decision could see them stripped of the trophies won during that period.

The Ibrox club and their fans claim they have already been punished enough and on Saturday McCoist said he would "never accept" stripping the club of titles.

Colorado Shooting: Aurora Police Chief Gives Update On Investigation Of Theater Shooter's Apartment

Law enforcement officials described the "mind-boggling" scene inside James Holmes' Colorado apartment during a press conference Saturday afternoon.

Holmes, 24, was arrested early Friday outside an Aurora movie theater after witnesses say he unleashed tear gas and gunfire on a crowd of moviegoers watching the midnight showing of the new Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises." Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates provided details of Holmes' booby-trapped apartment at the press conference, noting the apartment was designed "to kill whoever entered it."

"It was an extremely dangerous environment," Oates said. "If a neighbor or an unassuming pedestrian would've walked in that door, or God forbid a first responder, they would've sustained significant injuries and/or lost their life."

"It was going to be a police officer," Oates continued. "We sure as hell are angry."

Oates said officials set off two devices in Holmes' apartment Saturday afternoon. He noted evidence recovery in the apartment "will continue to take some time."

Police are still unsure if Holmes illegally obtained any of the materials used to create the devices. Oates said there is no evidence that the shooting suspect had access to "dangerous materials" at University of Colorado-Denver Medical School, where he was enrolled until June 2012.

The AP reported earlier:

Authorities on Saturday began disarming trip wires and explosive devices "set up to kill" inside the apartment of the suspect in the deadly Colorado movie theater shooting, hoping to find clues to his motive without destroying key evidence in a blast.

Federal authorities detonated one small explosive and disarmed another inside James Holmes' suburban Denver apartment with a device that emits a shock wave and water, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. The official spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the ongoing investigation into the shooting rampage that killed 12 people and wounded 58.

Holmes' apartment appears to have three types of explosives ? jars filled with accelerants, chemicals that would explode when mixed together and more than 30 "improvised grenades," the official said.

Motherhood Uncensored: In like a lion, out like a rack of lamb

I really wasn't surprised to hear that my mom was pissed that I tossed her rack of lamb.?It was just one of the many [two 2-ton dumpster full] casualities in my house cleaning extravaganza. ?

And this week, she finally heads home after spending the last month with a family friend, so I'm sure this will only be the start. More than enough reassurance as to why I live 800 miles away.?

I had this brilliant idea to Facetime with her as she walked through the house for the first time since she had her heart surgery but then I realized that might not be as smart. The last thing I need is for me to be excited about the completely cleaned out kitchen cabinets and her freaking out about where all her dishes went.?

(In a box. In a garage. It's all the other stuff in the kitchen I tossed, Mom).

There's really no hope for her not to be angry at me at some level. I saved what I thought was important and tossed what I thought was not. But because I'm not her (and she's not me), her definition of important and mine are probably a little off.?

Actually, I'm sure of it based on all the crap that was in her house.?

I imagine much of what I tossed she won't even miss. And if she does, like say her obsolete nursing textbooks from 1994 that are all now in their 5th edition and she never uses, ?I told my brother to tell her I packed them away in a box in the basement.?

But I'm hoping that the hospital grade cleaning that brought me to tears when I my brother sent me pictures and the fresh coat of paint will help ease the shock.?

Add in the power washing, which my brother described as "Harry Potter like" when all the throngs of daddy long legs spiders leapt away from the house during his chemical pre-treatment, the new air conditioner (which hadn't worked for a couple of years - eep!), and a little bit of landscaping.

We even purchased a new television and family room furniture set to make up for the one we tossed that was so completely covered in dust and cat hair that we couldn't even donate it.?

The truth is she's been wanting to sell the house for years but could never bring herself to do what I did, probably because she would never have been able to do it herself.?

I could barely do it myself, even with the help of my brother and his wife.

So now it's ready. And I hope she sees what everyone else is telling me it is: A gift.?

The money I put in her account will be more than enough for her to purchase what she thinks she's missing, which so far is a pretty important?rack of lamb.?

And if it doesn't, I will happily remind her that she was sleeping on the original mattress she had when she moved into the house. In 1978.?

With pictures to remind her of its condition.

And that I found mouse shit in her silverware drawer.?

Zaki Hasan: Zaki's Review: The Dark Knight Rises

Read my 2005 review of Batman Begins here

Read my 2008 review of The Dark Knight here

Four years ago, after watching The Dark Knight and having my mind suitably blown, I said repeatedly that I'd be absolutely content if they never made another Batman movie again. So perfectly did the filmmakers hit the nail on the head with what precisely a big screen Batman opus could accomplish that there was simply no way to ever top it. So why bother trying? Sure, there were some dangling plot threads unresolved, with our hero on the run from the police after taking the blame for several crimes he didn't commit, but that was okay. He'd get out of it somehow. He is Batman, after all. We just didn't need to see it. Ever.

After watching director Christopher Nolan's much-anticipated trilogy-capper, and even after appreciating a great many things about it, I still stand by that earlier sentiment. The Dark Knight Rises is resonant emotional, and sometimes beautiful, but it's also overlong, overstuffed and oftentimes frustrating. It manages to pack in enough moments of true cinematic mastery to make it worthy of watching and appreciating, even as it takes a series of baffling and unnecessary storytelling detours that only weaken the overall experience and make this trilogy land just short of the greatness it could have had.

As we join the action in this installment, eight years have passed since the Joker's brief reign of terror through Gotham City left several police officers dead, and beloved DA Harvey Dent criminally insane (and also dead, natch). In the aftermath of those events, a new law passed in Dent's honor has given the authorities unprecedented powers to eliminate organized crime in a way that's made Gotham virtually crime-free for nearly a decade. The trade-off is that the Batman, having allowed himself to be scapegoated for Dent's crimes, has disappeared entirely, with his millionaire alter ego receding from public view into a life of secretive seclusion.

Of course, things can't remain so sedentary for long, and when criminal mastermind Bane (Tom Hardy), a masked brawler with ties to the Batman's own history, executes a plan aimed at bringing Gotham to its knees, Bruce Wayne is forced to give up his latter-day Howard Hughes act and suit up for the greater good. Also along for the ride this time, in addition to dependable utility players Gary Oldman (Commissioner Gordon), Morgan Freeman (quartermaster Lucius Fox), and Michael Caine (trusted manservant Alfred Pennyworth), are Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a beat cop named Blake, Marion Cotillard as Wayne's business associate Miranda Tate (with some secrets of her own), and Anne Hathaway as a burglar who'd be called Catwoman in any other movie, but is only ever referred to as Selina Kyle here.

Just one look at the bloated list of characters whose arcs we follow should clue you in that The Dark Knight Rises treads dangerously close to what I will now and forevermore refer to as "Spider-Man 3 Syndrome," where so many new and divergent plot and character threads are introduced and require attention that the one character who ends up getting left behind is the one we're ostensibly supposed to care the most about. It's almost as if Nolan lost interest in his lead partway through the proceedings and decided to cast his gaze elsewhere to keep himself engaged. Thus, we're saddled with interminable stretches of a Dark Knight movie with no "Dark Knight."

Another way the Spider-Man 3 comparison (one I make with no pleasure) rears its head is how Nolan's Bat-series has been compressed and compacted into a trilogy, regardless of necessity or appropriateness. As I said a few weeks ago while discussing the much-loathed final installment of the Sam Raimi Spider-series, "there's no Sherwood burial or flight to Avalon for Batman or Superman or their ilk." That's what separates these modern myths from their literary forebears. Batman has been beating back the Gotham underworld since his 1939 debut in Detective Comics #27, and he's in no danger of stopping anytime soon. These are stories that, by their very nature, don't end. They can't.

Of course, the needs of filmic storytelling are different from those of serialized comic books, so it's understandable that Nolan approached the project with a clear beginning, middle and end in mind, with an elegiac tone to the proceedings as the air of finality begins to settle in. It's not his reasons I fault, but rather the execution. Without dipping my toes too far into spoiler territory, there's a difference between closure and closing, and by choosing to make? The Dark Knight Rises not just his last Batman, but the last Batman, Nolan essentially tells the story that should never be told, and does so in a way that leaves the status quo so cracked that the only way to put Humpty Dumpty back together is to reboot the thing yet again. Which is a shame.

With all that said, and even taking into account my issues with some storytelling choices, from perplexing character beats (in a particularly egregious lapse, one key figure disappears with nary hide nor hair for the entire middle, only to re-emerge without explanation during the closing moments) to baffling plot points (Bane's whole plan for Gotham doesn't really withstand much scrutiny), the script by Nolan, brother Jonathan, and David Goyer, is rarely, if ever, dull. And again, Nolan's preternatural abilities as a director are on full display. From the harrowing opening scene with Bane freed from captivity on an airplane, to the entire third act, with its sprawling shots of Gotham cops taking on Bane's men, and Batman's snazzy new jet flying high over the cityscape, there's rarely a moment that's not visually engrossing.

Also, as is expected with a cast like this, the performances are uniformly good. Bale and the other returnees are of course fine, even though it feels like we barely get to spend any time with them. Bale in particular feels like a spectator to his own story, with Bruce Wayne flitting in-and-out, and making only two or three appearances in his full Bat-regalia. On that point, another qualm I have is how, if we follow the movies' internal timeline, Bruce was Batman for about six months to a year between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, after which he went into hiding for eight years, and then re-emerged for another day or so. That doesn't really give him very much time on the clock to grow into the "legend" they spend so much time telling us he is.

If anyone emerges as a genuine star here, it's Gordon-Levitt, the de facto lead for much of the second act (and about whom a last-second reveal is likely to elicit either gasps or groans). Hardy too disappears into the role of Bane, who no longer has the drug-induced super strength from the comics but does get to recreate the character's most iconic four-color moment. The one knock on Hardy is one he has no control over: unfair comparisons with the late Heath Ledger's unforgettable, Oscar-winning take on the Joker last time. On the other hand, Cotillard and Hathaway are left underserved, doing the best they can with nothing parts. Hathaway in particular is fine, but is done zero favors by a script that seemed to include Catwoman more as merchandising obligation than storytelling necessity.

The Dark Knight Rises isn't quite a swing-and-a-miss, but it can't help but feel like it. And even if is, I'm still sad to see this series end. Maybe it's just that the earlier movies were simply too high a bar for any filmmaker to top, even the man who made them. Said I of The Dark Knight in '08: "Not just a perfect comic book movie, not just a perfect Batman movie, but darn-near a perfect movie, full stop." That remains true today. Given that, and given how Inception in 2010 raised our expectations for Nolan even higher still, I suppose it's altogether expected that his final Batman entry glides us back down to Earth, a reminder that the figure behind the camera, just like the figure behind the cowl, is indeed just a man after all. B-

The Law Of Attraction - a Way of Being

Swan Swimming

By Trevor Emdon

On many law of attraction forums and websites you?ll see questions about how to make the law of attraction work.

How can I attract more money?
Can I attract true love?

As a law of attraction coach, I feel a pang of frustration: I want to help all of those people at once because the answer is actually very simple. The problem with the answer is that its very simplicity makes people doubt it.

Before I tell you what that answer is, let us be clear about the nature of the problem. A little insight into human (i.e. your own), psychology can save you a great deal of trouble and soul-searching later on.

We are living in the age of the ?quick fix.? As somebody pointed out not so long ago, most of our mothers and grandmothers would spend every Sunday preparing the family dinner. Now we live in a time where we stand in front of the microwave shouting, ?Hurry up!?

The law of attraction has caught the public imagination this time around partly due to mass communication the like of which the world has never seen, but mostly because we all want to believe that success, happiness and personal fulfillment can not only be ours, but that we aren?t merely subject to fate and luck to have them show up in our lives.

In other words, the law of attraction is regarded as another ?technique? that, if applied correctly will bring the desired results. The truth is it will bring you all you desire, but it isn?t a ?thing? you can ?apply.? It?s a law ? you either live within it or you go against it.

You?ll know if you?re going against it. You?ll feel stressed, anxious and worried a lot of the time. You may get sick if you make that a lifestyle. You?ll believe that things happen through struggle, gargantuan quantities of effort and often strife. You may even believe that you can?t have all the good things unless you go through some pain.

Going with it means the opposite, of course. You?ll feel great almost every day. Even when things stray off course you?ll be relaxed about it, knowing that a new way will open up and you will get through it. And even whilst you?re going through tougher times, you?ll see the experience as an adventure.

Living in that space means being at peace with yourself and the world. It means that you don?t see other people in the same business as rivals but as co-pilots in the same boat as you. You sense connection with all that is ? including your desires.

Viewed this way, the law of attraction isn?t something you do, it?s something you are. It?s a way of living life, a way of being.

All those people who are asking to attract more money or love or indeed anything are looking through the wrong end of the telescope, as it were. They are looking at the situation they are in and essentially wishing it was different. In other words, they are focussing outwards on what is. What they need to learn to do is to focus inwards and become what they want.

How do you become more money? It?s a fair question, and of course you can?t do that. But you can feel prosperous. You can make it a habit to notice what you have instead of what you?re missing. What you have doesn?t have to be cash, you know. You can notice that you have health, a view from your window and a computer to read this on. And that?s just the start.

It?s the emotion that pulls the new circumstances towards you. Or, as I like to spell it, it?s the e-motion that does the trick. ?e,? if you recall, stands for energy as in e=mc2. E-motion is thus energy in motion. It?s that movement of energy that will harmonise with the desired outcome.

The answer to the question ?Can you make the law of attraction work?? is, as I promised very simple. You make you inner world feel the way you want your outer world to show up. That is a simple answer and it qualifies as a ?yes.? Not necessarily simple to execute I know. But at least you know where to start.

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? (Courtesy of Jahlil Hall)

An 18-year-old man who was shot in the head, leg, arm and chest told friends he felt as if he?d been ?punched in the head? and his ?arm?? ?blown off? after he was hit by gunfire in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater Friday morning.

Louis Duran, 18, was released from the hospital and is recovering at home, said his high school friend Jahlil Hall.

Hall visited Duran this morning and said his friend knew he was ?lucky to be alive.?

Duran skipped the usual Thursday basketball game he plays with Hall and friends, and instead attended the midnight screening of ?The Dark Night Rises? with two high school friends, Hall said.

He was sitting toward the front of the theater when he was hit by a ?spray of bullets unleashed by alleged gunman James Holmes.

?He said it felt like getting punched in the head and it was really hot,?? Hall said. ?Then he felt like his arm had been blown off. He ran over to the stairs and some random guy helped him out of the theater.?

One friend was grazed by a bullet, while another is in the intensive care unit at University Medical of Aurora, Hall said.

Once outside, Duran took off his shirt and wrapped it around his head in order to apply pressure to his wounds, Hall said.

?He was on the phone with his mom and just in complete shock,? he said.

Duran was transported to the Medical Center of Aurora, where he was treated and released.

?There are a ton of pellets still in him,? Hall said. ?He?s lucky to be alive, definitely.?

Cassini spots daytime lightning on Saturn

ScienceDaily (July 19, 2012) ? Saturn was playing the lightning storm blues. NASA's Cassini spacecraft has captured images of last year's storm on Saturn, the largest storm seen up-close at the planet, with bluish spots in the middle of swirling clouds. Those bluish spots indicate flashes of lightning and mark the first time scientists have detected lightning in visible wavelengths on the side of Saturn illuminated by the sun.

"We didn't think we'd see lightning on Saturn's day side -- only its night side," said Ulyana Dyudina, a Cassini imaging team associate based at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. "The fact that Cassini was able to detect the lightning means that it was very intense."

Images can be found at http://www.nasa.gov/cassini, http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov and http://ciclops.org.

The storm occurred last year. The lightning flashes appear brightest in the blue filter of Cassini's imaging camera on March 6, 2011. Scientists aggressively heightened the blue tint of the image to determine its size and location. Scientists are still analyzing why the blue filter catches the lightning. It might be that the lightning really is blue, or it might be that the short exposure of the camera in the blue filter makes the short-lived lightning easier to see.

What scientists do know is that the intensity of the flash is comparable to the strongest flashes on Earth. The visible energy alone is estimated to be about 3 billion watts lasting for one second. The flash is approximately 100 miles (200 kilometers) in diameter when it exits the tops of the clouds. From this, scientists deduce that the lightning bolts originate in the clouds deeper down in Saturn's atmosphere where water droplets freeze. This is analogous to where lightning is created in Earth's atmosphere.

In composite images that show the band of the storm wrapping all the way around Saturn, scientists have seen multiple flashes. In one composite image, they recorded five flashes, and in another, three flashes.

"As summer storm season descends upon Earth's northern latitudes, Cassini provides us a great opportunity to see how weather plays out at different places in our solar system," said Linda Spilker, Cassini project scientist, based at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "Saturn's atmosphere has been changing over the eight years Cassini has been at Saturn, and we can't wait to see what happens next."

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras were designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The imaging team is based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.

<strong>"Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> ABC's new bleep-worthy comedy starring Krysten Ritter, Dreama Walker and James Van Der Beek is a funny one, and definitely embraces the quirk (Beek Jeans!), so we're excited to see what they do with a second season.

  • "Desperate Housewives"

<strong>"Desperate Housewives," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> After countless deaths, murders, betrayals and natural disasters on Wisteria Lane over the show's eight seasons, the ladies of "Desperate Housewives" will say goodbye forever this May.

  • "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition"

<strong>"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> After a whopping nine seasons, the do-gooding show came to an end in January. But worry not, it will continue to have a few specials to make viewers cry tears of joy.

  • "GCB"

<strong>"GCB," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This "Desperate Housewives"-esque dramedy premiered to less than 8 million viewers, and the phenomenal cast (Kristin Chenoweth, Annie Potts, Leslie Bibb) couldn't bring in a Texas-sized audience, so ABC canceled it.

  • "Grey's Anatomy"

<strong>"Grey's Anatomy," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Shonda Rhimes' medical drama is a ratings juggernaut, even in its eighth season, and with most of her <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/10/greys-anatomy-ellen-pompeo_n_1506113.html?ref=tv" target="_hplink">big stars signed on for more</a>, ABC gave the go-ahead for a ninth season.

  • "Happy Endings"

<strong>"Happy Endings," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show is way too "ca-yute" to bubble it, and obviously someone high up at ABC agrees. After its first season was moved around and aired all out of order, the network still gave it another chance to find its audience in Season 2 ... and it has, and hopefully will continue to in Season 3.

  • "Last Man Standing"

<strong>"Last Man Standing," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status: </strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Ratings for Tim Allen's return to sitcoms have been very strong, making it Tuesday's most-watched comedy. If you can beat "Glee" and "The Biggest Loser," a second season is a given.

  • "Man Up!"

    <strong>"Man Up!," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> ABC pulled the show after eight episodes.

  • "The Middle"

<strong>"The Middle," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Now in its third season, "The Middle" is still holding onto its middle position in the ratings on Wednesday nights, and that seems just about right. It doesn't do "American Idol" or "Survivor" numbers, of course, but with over 7 million viewers, it's a strong comedy for the network that easily beats anything NBC is offering.

  • "Missing"

<strong>"Missing," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Ashley Judd lead this drama about a former CIA agent whose son goes missing, kicking her back into action to find him. The series was only set to air 10 episodes, miniseries-style, with the potential for more, but a cancellation means that's all they're getting.

  • "Modern Family"

<strong>"Modern Family," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Modern Family" remains ABC's biggest sitcom success story of the last decade, both in ratings and awards love. This critical darling is getting a fourth season of hijinks with the hilarious Pritchett-Dunphy clan.

  • "Once Upon A Time"

<strong>"Once Upon A Time," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Once Upon a Time" has gotten praise for being one of the more family-friendly dramas on TV, and it's been pulling in close to 10 million viewers each week because of it. We're excited by the almost endless possibilities for new fairy tale-inspired stories to tackle in Season 2.

  • "Pan Am"

<strong>"Pan Am," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Poor "Pan Am" just never quite took off. The series' vintage look actually worked against it, much like NBC's swiftly canceled "Playboy Club" -- guess when you're being compared to award-winning shows like "Mad Men," it makes it more than a little tough to live up to the hype.

  • "Private Practice"

<strong>"Private Practice," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Private Practice" has never gotten "Grey's Anatomy"-level ratings, and things got shakier when ABC bumped it to Tuesday nights to make room for creator Shonda Rhimes' <em>other</em> new show, "Scandal," but they've given the show a sixth season order.

  • "Revenge"

<strong>"Revenge," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> With a clever mix of drama, mystery and serious revenge-ing, this is hands down one of the most addictive new shows on TV, and we can't wait to see where they take things in Season 2.

  • "The River"

<strong>"The River," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The promise of "Paranormal Activity"-like scares each week quickly fizzled after this show premiered, along with the ratings. The first season's eight episodes came and went, and ABC has nixed any plans for more.

  • "Scandal"

<strong>"Scandal," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Shonda Rhimes' latest show isn't about doctors at all -- and that's why we're glad it's sticking around. Kerry Washington is amazing as Olivia Pope, a Washington, D.C. fixer with a crack team of specialists helping make bad headlines vanish before they're ever written. Here's hoping for more than seven episodes in its second season.

  • "Shark Tank"

<strong>"Shark Tank," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Now in its third season, this reality competition show is unlike any other on network TV and ABC is keeping it around for more for that very reason.

  • "Suburgatory"

<strong>"Suburgatory," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> It's smart, quick and not too cute -- "Suburgatory" is consistently named the sitcom you should be watching, but probably aren't. The great cast makes this one a no-brainer, and the ratings have stayed pretty consistent, too. We're thrilled it's getting a second season to shine!

  • "Work It"

    <strong>"Work It," ABC</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Let us count the ways ...

  • "2 Broke Girls"

<strong>"2 Broke Girls," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>At first, people balked at the racist supporting characters, but now it seems that audiences are all over "2 Broke Girls" -- it's ratings have seen a steady increase, and it won the People's Choice Award for Favorite New Comedy.

  • "A Gifted Man"

<strong>"A Gifted Man," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>"A Gifted Man's" total viewer numbers were OK for a Friday night, but a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic is especially bad for CBS. Another bad sign: star Patrick Wilson tweeted about the end: "I had a great time. Thanks to my fans. So happy it's done." And done it is.

  • "The Amazing Race"

<strong>"The Amazing Race," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status: </strong>Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Voted the best reality show on TV several times (albeit years ago), "The Amazing Race" isn't going anywhere. Ratings have dropped a bit, but are still solid.

  • "The Big Bang Theory"

<strong>"The Big Bang Theory," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Nothing seems to be able to make a dent in this show. With fantastic ratings (it beat "Idol"!) and a rabid following, we'll be seeing plenty more "Big Bang" before its run is over.

  • "Blue Bloods"

<strong>"Blue Bloods," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The anchor of Friday nights on CBS, "Blue Bloods" has performed well, pulling in around 11 million viewers an episode. The show might not have the youngest audience, but it's still enough for CBS to keep it on the schedule.

  • "Criminal Minds"

<strong>"Criminal Minds," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Paget Brewster might be checking out, but "Criminal Minds" is here to stay. In Season 7, the procedural is still a consistently strong ratings performer for CBS.

  • "CSI"

<strong>"CSI," CBS</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Whenever the time comes, the "CSI" mothership will end with a lot of fanfare, but not this year. With new faces Ted Danson and Elisabeth Shue around, there is going to be at least one more season.<br />

  • "CSI: Miami"

<strong>"CSI: Miami," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Out of the three (!) "CSI" programs on the air, "CSI: Miami" is the one to say goodbye first. The one-time ratings giant has been affected by football overruns (just as "The Good Wife" has) and "CSI: NY" has the edge in terms of total viewers, meaning a "Miami" sunset was inevitable. <br />

  • "CSI: NY"

<strong>"CSI: NY," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Of the two "CSI" spinoffs, "CSI: NY" is the stronger -- pulling in more than 10 million viewers on a Friday night is no easy task -- and with "CSI: Miami" canceled, "CSI: NY's" renewal was a no-brainer.

  • "The Good Wife"

<strong>"The Good Wife," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This critical darling suffered after its move from Tuesdays to Sundays thanks to sports overruns. The viewers are frustrated, but given its strong cast and Emmy love, the show is still coming back for more.

  • "Hawaii Five-0"

    <strong>"Hawaii Five-0," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Despite the scheduling setback as Alex O'Loughlin seeks treatment, Season 2 is still doing well for CBS in a very competitive timeslot.<br />

  • "How To Be a Gentleman"

<strong>"How To Be A Gentleman," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Not even having "The Big Bang Theory" as a lead-in could save this David Hornsby project, which only lasted three episodes.

  • "How I Met Your Mother"

<strong>"How I Met Your Mother," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> CBS renewed "How I Met Your Mother" for two more seasons in March 2011, so fans can look forward to being strung along about the titular mother's identity for a bit longer.<br />

  • "The Mentalist"

<strong>"The Mentalist," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Although the show hit a season ratings low in the middle of February, its fanbase and overall ratings were enough to have it return for another season.

  • "Mike & Molly"

<strong>"Mike & Molly," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Thanks to an Emmy win and Oscar nomination, Melissa McCarthy is a Hollywood power player and CBS is keen to keep her around. Just look at the multiple pilots she has in the works as a behind the scenes player! "Mike & Molly" will be back for a third season.

  • "NCIS"

<strong>"NCIS," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The long-running procedural has become a ratings juggernaut at a time when most shows start shedding viewers. Season 10 is now happening.

  • "NCIS: Los Angeles"

<strong>"NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong>Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show has gone up in the ratings over the last couple of years, and people can't get enough of L.L. Cool J and Chris O'Donnell.

  • "NYC 22"

<strong>"NYC 22," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This "Rookie Blue" clone from executive producer Robert DeNiro didn't really move the needle when it premiered midseason; CBS officially axed it with three episodes left to air.

  • "Person of Interest"

<strong>"Person of Interest," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> With ratings matching juggernauts like "Grey's Anatomy" and fans popping up everywhere, we'll be seeing another season of "Person of Interest."

  • "Rob"

<strong>"Rob," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Rob's" spot after ratings juggernaut "The Big Bang Theory" probably went a long way in helping it survive to see the end of its first season, but that's as far as it'll get.

  • "Rules of Engagement"

<strong>"Rules of Engagement," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show has moved around so much it's hard to remember when it's on, and with six seasons under its belt it's had quite a nice run. Despite slipping ratings and the aforementioned constant switcheroos, there's still a future for "Rules of Engagement."

  • "Survivor"

<strong>"Survivor," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status: </strong>Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Of <em>course</em> we have "Survivor" coming back for another season. Where else are we going to see petty squabbles and insane behavior on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world?

  • "Two and a Half Men"

<strong>"Two and a Half Men," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Despite a less-than-favorable critical response, the revamped "Two and a Half Men" keeps pulling in respectable numbers every week. Ashton Kutcher, Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones will all return for a Season 10.

  • "Undercover Boss"

<strong>"Undercover Boss," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The inherent addictiveness of this show has gone a long way in securing loyal viewers -- it has been on top of the ratings several times this season alone.

  • "Unforgettable"

<strong>"Unforgettable," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Likely to be renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> In its timeslot, "Unforgettable" keeps emerging on top, beating out "Parenthood" and "Body of Proof." Leading lady Poppy Montgomery has been called "the female version of 'The Mentalist,'" another top-rated show, so things are looking positive.

  • "90210"

<strong>"90210," The CW</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> While its ratings have plummeted since last season, the Beverly Hills crew is still doing better than "Supernatural," "Hart of Dixie," "Nikita," and "Gossip Girl" on average.

  • "America's Next Top Model"

<strong>"America's Next Top Model," The CW<br /> Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Tyra Banks' reality show is in the early stages of its 18th cycle with a Brit vs. U.S. installment. Cycle 19 will be the show's inaugural "college edition."

  • "H8R"

<strong>"H8R," The CW</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Apparently, the opposite of MTV's former series "Fanatic" proved people don't love to hate Kim Kardashian and Snooki as much as we thought. It lasted four episodes.

  • "Hart of Dixie"

<strong>"Hart of Dixie," The CW</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Josh Schwartz and Rachel Bilson return for a sophomore season of "Hart of Dixie," hopefully so they can make more viral videos.

  • "Nikita"

<strong>"Nikita," The CW</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>We're shocked the show is coming back for another season, but its hard-core fans will certainly be happy.

  • "One Tree Hill"

<strong>"One Tree Hill," The CW</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> After nine seasons, it's time to say goodbye to "One Tree Hill." After subpar ratings, the network decided to pull the plug on its long-standing teen soap. Thankfully, the CW gave "One Tree Hill" a final 13 episodes to wrap up all of the drama.

  • "Remodeled"

<strong>"Remodeled," The CW</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> As good as dead<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Not only has "Remodeled" already been replaced on the CW schedule, but it debuted with one of the CW's lowest-rated premiere ever, scoring a terrible 0.3 in the coveted 18-49 demo.

  • "Alcatraz"

<strong>"Alcatraz," Fox</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Alcatraz" -- and almost every other recent J.J. Abrams TV project -- proves that slapping "from J.J. Abrams" on a show does not equal ratings success. The series debuted strong, but fizzled in the ratings, leading Fox to pull the plug.

  • "Allen Gregory"

<strong>"Allen Gregory," Fox</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Jonah Hill's animated series only lasted seven episodes. The Oscar nominee should probably just stick to movies for a while ...

  • "Bones"

<strong>"Bones," Fox</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed <br /> <strong>Why: </strong>The show got a ratings boost thanks to its lead-in "The X Factor." With the floundering state of Fox's dramas (see ya, "House"), Fox is holding on to this one.

  • "Breaking In"

<strong>"Breaking In," Fox</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>After a last minute revival, "Breaking In" returned for a second season with Megan Mullally in tow, but it wasn't enough to revive this D.O.A. comedy.

  • "The Cleveland Show"

<strong>"The Cleveland Show," Fox</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Fox gave "The Cleveland Show" and "American Dad" early renewals and this spinoff will be back for a Season 4, but no word on a fifth season.<br />

<strong>"I Hate My Teenage Daughter," Fox</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why: </strong> As if getting panned by critics wasn't enough, "I Hate My Teenage Daughter's" shrinking ratings had the show marked for death, then Fox benched the sitcom for three months after only four episodes and then ... yep, buh-bye forever. • "Awake"

<strong>"Bent," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why: </strong>The Amanda Peet comedy premiered in late March and had six episodes to prove itself, but NBC didn't give it much of a chance, airing them back-to-back.

Cool, cool, cool -- you can pop, pop! that champagne now.

  • "Fashion Star"

<strong>"Fashion Star," NBC</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>The high-style reality series with Nicole Richie, Jessica Simpson, Elle Macpherson and John Varvatos has certainly been confusing, but it's still a smart business model: The winning designs each week are for sale in stores the next day, and those stores just happen to be covering a large portion of production and advertising costs.

  • "Fear Factor"

<strong>"Fear Factor," NBC <br /> Status:</strong> Likely to be renewed <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Despite the donkey semen scandal that cut this season of "Fear Factor" a bit short, <a href="http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/12/13/fear-factor-returns-and-makes-a-ratings-splash/" target="_hplink">"Fear Factor" boosts NBC's ratings</a> ... and can a scandal really compete with that?

  • "The Firm"

<strong>"The Firm," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> As good as dead<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The show hasn't officially gotten the axe yet, but "The Firm" was moved to Saturdays after turning in an incredibly poor performance (less than a 1 rating in the 18-49 demo) on Thursday nights.

  • "Free Agents"

<strong>"Free Agents," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show just didn't have much life in it. It was canceled after just four episodes, despite its awesome lead actors Hank Azaria and Kathryn Hahn.

  • "Grimm"

<strong>"Grimm," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The supernatural fairy tale drama has been doing well for NBC on Friday nights -- it hovers around the 5 million viewers mark, which is pretty solid by NBC standards and why the network gave the drama an early renewal.

  • "Harry's Law"

<strong>"Harry's Law," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong>Cancelled<br /> <strong>Why: </strong> While earlier this year "Harry's Law" was one of NBC's top players, after a three-month break between January and March, the Kathy Bates drama saw mediocre ratings and failed to hold on to viewers.

  • "Law & Order: SVU"

<strong>"Law & Order: SVU," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The only "Law & Order" left, "SVU" has been an NBC power player for 13 years and will return for a 14th.

  • "The Office"

<strong>"The Office," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> It's hard to imagine a long-running, fan-favorite show like "The Office" going away without a big promotional push. The numbers are still good (by NBC standards) and "The Office" will return for a Season 9.

  • "Parenthood"

<strong>"Parenthood," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The perpetual bubble show has done pretty consistent numbers for NBC this season, but three seasons in and no signs of growth is both a good and bad sign ... luckily for fans, NBC gave it a Season 4 all the same.

  • "Parks and Recreation"

<strong>"Parks and Recreation," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Just like the rest of NBC's Thursday comedy block, "Parks and Recreation" has serious ratings blues. Can critical acclaim keep "Parks" around for a Season 5? The answer is yes! "Parks" will return for Season 5.

  • "The Playboy Club"

<strong>"The Playboy Club," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Apparently fictional slutty bunnies and real-life homewrecker Eddie Cibrian do not a successful show make. It only lasted three episodes. "The Girls Next Door" did it better.

  • "Prime Suspect"

<strong>"Prime Suspect," NBC <br /> Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Maria Bello's gruff detective failed to capture the audience NBC hoped. At least we had all those hat jokes. <br />

  • "Smash"

<strong>"Smash," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed <br /> <strong>Why: </strong> After a huge promo blitz, "Smash" debuted nicely, but started losing viewers quickly. A handful of episodes in, it stabilized, becoming NBC's #1 drama in the 18-49 demo, and NBC announced it was getting a second season.

  • "Up All Night"

<strong>"Up All Night," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The critical favorite of NBC's new comedy offerings, "Up All Night" debuted strongly to more than 10 million viewers, but has since dropped to less than 4 million viewers an episode. It will return for a Season 2.

  • "Whitney"

<strong>"Whitney," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The show is one of the better performing freshman offerings on the Peacock network -- and NBC chief Bob Greenblatt told members of the press at TCA that he is "hopeful Whitney will be a long-term player for us." Looks like Season 2 is a good start, with the show moving to Friday nights.

  • "The Voice"

<strong>"The Voice," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> We may not even be at Season 2's live shows yet, but NBC is already up for more of "The Voice." Hopefully, Cee Lo's cat "Purrfect" will return for Season 3 as well.

  • "Who Do You Think You Are?"

<strong>"Who Do You Think You Are?," NBC<br /> Status:</strong> Likely to be renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The celebrity-centric family tree series has helped NBC on Friday nights and hit its ratings high in March.
