Faults show Lake Tahoe area's shaky past

As a cross-country skier trekked through the wilderness near Lake Tahoe 15 years ago, he noticed something odd about the trail he'd taken. The hill crest that had been beneath his skis abruptly dropped off, then picked up again about 20 feet away.

As luck would have it, the skier was a geologist, and the oddities of that trail ? including the offset moraines, or ancient glacial deposits, he noticed that day ? helped him piece together the seismic hazards underlying the Lake Tahoe region.

"As you walk along these very prominent geologic features, all of the sudden, that same feature is now over there," said James Howle, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Carnelian Bay, Calif. "These long, linear moraines are very abruptly offset, and I couldn't help but ask, 'What caused that?'"

Howle has been studying the region ever since. He's now identified five active seismic faults, which point to important landslide and earthquake hazards ? potentially up to magnitude-6.9 temblors ? for those living near Lake Tahoe.

Finding faults
Together, the five faults make up the Tahoe-Sierra Frontal Fault Zone, which lies between the Sierra Nevada and the west side of Lake Tahoe. Geologists had known about several of these faults before Howle's latest findings, which were detailed online May 18 in the journal Geological Society of America Bulletin, but heavy tree and brush cover made the area difficult to survey.

Using LiDAR, a type of laser radar that can "see" through dense vegetation, Howle's team precisely traced the five faults and measured their offsets, or the distances seismic activity had moved land on each side of the faults. They also found, from radioisotope data, that the glacial moraines in the region were 21,000 and 70,000 years old ? an important piece of the puzzle that scientists hadn't known before, Howle said.

The data allowed Howle's team to calculate how fast the land along the faults is moving. The rates they calculated are two to three times greater than had been estimated, he said. [ 13 Crazy Earthquake Facts ]

Those slip rates boil down to significant seismic risks. A rupture along any of the five faults could generate a magnitude-6.3 to 6.6 quake, the team calculated. If two or more adjacent faults ruptured together, they could produce a magnitude-6.9 or greater quake.

"The seismic hazard itself hasn't increased," Howle told OurAmazingPlanet. "The faults have always been there, the hazard has always been there, we just didn't have the data to quantify it until now."

Quakes and slides
What do the findings mean for those who call Lake Tahoe home? Be prepared, advised Howle, who lives in the area and has no plans to relocate.

    3. Supervolcanoes may have shorter fuse
    4. Origin of disputed tyrannosaur investigated

The faults have not produced any major quakes since people have been living in the region, but that doesn't mean they won't, he said. The team doesn't have enough evidence to determine exactly how often earthquakes recur along these faults, but Howle estimates it's on the timescale of thousands of years. Since they don't know when the last quake occurred, the next could hit at any time.

What's more, earthquakes aren't the only danger. The team's LiDAR images show evidence of massive ancient land and rockslides associated with the quakes.

"It's kind of a latent hazard, and people don't take it seriously because there hasn't been much seismic activity here in historical times," Howle said. "But these new data clearly show the faults are active. They haven't ruptured while we've been around here, but they have been active in recent geologic time."

Syrian diplomats around the world expelled

PARIS (AP) ? Governments around the world expelled Syrian ambassadors and diplomats Tuesday, an unusual, coordinated blow to Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime following a gruesome massacre that the United Nations said involved close-range shootings of scores of children and parents in their homes.

The United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands took action Tuesday against Syrian diplomats. Britain's foreign secretary said the countries involved in Tuesday's expulsions would also push for tougher sanctions against Syria.

The move came after the killings Friday in Houla, a collection of farming villages in Syria's Homs province ? one of the deadliest single events in a 15-month-old uprising against Assad that has killed thousands.

A U.N. report Tuesday said 49 children and 34 women were among the 108 people who died, but it did not decisively say who carried out most of the killings.

"This is the most effective way we've got of sending a message of revulsion of what has happened in Syria," Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr said in Canberra. In a statement, he called the Houla killings a "hideous and brutal crime" and said Australia would not engage with the Syrian government unless it abides by a U.N. cease-fire plan.

Diplomats at the U.N., the European Union and the Arab League have been working since the Houla massacre to coordinate new action against Syria's government, French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said.

It was not clear whether other countries ? among them Syrian allies such as Russia ? would join in the expulsions. Russian President Vladimir Putin is traveling to Germany and France this week and is likely to come under even greater pressure to soften his Syria-supportive stance.

"We have to continue our work with the Russians," British Foreign Secretary William Hague said. "We will continue to discuss this with Russia. Russia has particular leverage on the regime and therefore has a particular role in this crisis."

Hague said that the situation in Syria is more complicated than what international powers faced in Libya last year, when the United Nations approved intervention against dictator Moammar Gadhafi's regime.

The State Department said Tuesday that the charge d'affaires at the Syrian Embassy has been given 72 hours to leave the United States. Syria has not had an ambassador in the United States since the previous envoy left last year to take another post.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the U.S. holds "the Syrian government responsible for this slaughter of innocent lives."

Britain is expelling three Syrian diplomats to protest the Houla killings, among them Charge d'Affaires Ghassan Dalla ? the country's top ranking diplomat in London.

In Canada, Foreign Minister John Baird said all Syrian diplomats and their families have five days to leave. Another Syrian diplomat expected in Canada will be refused entry.

In France, Syria's former colonial ruler, new President Francois Hollande showed that he is not backing down from his predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy's tough line on Syria.

Ambassador Lamia Shakkour was notified Tuesday that she is persona non grata, along with two other embassy officials, the French Foreign Ministry said. Hollande said Shakkour is being expelled but that the timing is complicated by her dual status as Syria's ambassador to Paris-based UNESCO.

Hollande said that after high-level discussions with British Prime Minister David Cameron and U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, it had been decided to deploy "a certain number of ... pressure tactics," against Syria, including the expulsion of the ambassador.

Germany on Tuesday announced Syria's ambassador, Radwan Loutfi, had 72 hours to leave. Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said Germany and its allies hope "that this unambiguous message does not fall on deaf ears in Damascus."

"The Syrian regime bears responsibility for the terrible events in Houla," Westerwelle said in a statement. Westerwelle said Germany will push for the U.N. Security Council to consider the situation in Syria again.

"It has been clear not just since Houla that Syria has no future under Assad," Westerwelle said. "He must clear the way for peaceful change in Syria."

The Italian Foreign Ministry said Ambassador Khaddour Hassan was summoned and informed that he must leave. Spain said it was giving Syrian Ambassador Hussam Edin Aala and four other diplomats based in Madrid three days to leave the country.

Baird said these "Syrian representatives are not welcome in our countries while their masters in Damascus continue to perpetrate their heinous and murderous acts."

Australia gave Syrian Charge d'Affaires Jawdat Ali, the most senior Syrian diplomat in Australia, and another diplomat from the Syrian Embassy, 72 hours to leave the country.

Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal declared the Syrian ambassador to his country "persona non grata." ''It is no longer possible to work with a country with such a president," Rosenthal said on the ministry's official Twitter feed.

In Vienna, Foreign Ministry spokesman Nikolaus Lutterotti said the Syrian ambassador is being summoned to the ministry where officials will deliver a very hard protest about the massacre.

When asked if the expulsions were EU-wide, Lutterotti said this had not yet been decided. He said the ambassador to Austria would not be expelled as he holds an additional function as the representative to the U.N. organizations in Vienna.

There was no public Syrian reaction to the coordinated expulsions. Phone calls to Syria's embassy in Paris were not answered, and an official at the Syrian delegation to UNESCO refused to comment.

The U.N. estimates 9,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011.

Hollande said Tuesday that Paris will host a meeting in early July of the so-called Friends of Syria seeking a diplomatic solution to the conflict. The ambassador's expulsion came amid increasing diplomatic efforts to end the bloodshed in Syria and put pressure on Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The United States, Britain and France are among countries that have closed their embassies in Syria since the crackdown on protesters began last year.

PFT: How good is Peyton now? Peers weigh in

Jacksonville Jaguars NFL football team owner Shahid Khan poses at EverBank Field in JacksonvilleReuters

Uh.? Oh.

Jaguars owner Shahid Khan has been unequivocal regarding his desire to keep the team in Jacksonville.? He has adopted the city as a home away from home.? He has spent on free agents and he plans to spend on improving the team?s facilities.? He has donated $1 million to a veteran?s guidance center.

And he?s now embroiled in a full-blown fight with City officials.

In a May 30 letter to Mayor Alvin Brown, obtained by the Jacksonville Business Journal, Khan accuses the City of violating the lease agreement that allows the franchise to play at Everbank Field.

The dispute arises from the fairly mundane task of hiring a manager for the facility.? Khan contends that Section 2.5(E) of the lease requires the Jaguars to, upon reviewing the submitted proposals, make a recommendation to Jacksonville.? City officials then will evaluate the proposals after the Jaguars make the recommendation.? (The City apparently believes that the two parties must converse about the situation before any recommendations are made.)

Khan explains that the Jaguars made their recommendation, and that a lawyer representing Jacksonville then sent the team a letter declaring the franchise to be in default, and ?putting in motion a termination of our lease.?

As we said, ?Uh.? Oh.?

?The action of sending the default letter is unprecedented,? Khan writes.? ?The default mechanism of the lease has not been implemented in the 18 years the lease has been in effect.? While we certainly take the default claim seriously, the only response we can make to your letter is to cure the claimed default.? However, it is not possible to cure as we are in full compliance with the lease.

?Mayor, I hope you can understand that I am shocked and perplexed at the City?s actions.? I am at a loss to understand the purpose of this drastic and unprecedented action.? I am hopeful that the letter is as a result of an overzealous lawyer and not the result of the philosophy of your administration in dealing with the partnership between the City of Jacksonville and the Jaguars.? We have sought to comply exactly with our lease obligations.?

Khan then requests Brown to ?advise us of the method of your implementation of the default and termination, if that is your intention.?? Khan adds, ?We are on the cusp of training camp to begin the NFL season and will need to act quickly.?

Again:? ?Uh.? Oh.?

The fact that Jacksonville is initiating the termination process seems very odd, unless Jacksonville perceives that it can derive a benefit that somehow outweighs the costs of possibly giving the team the ability to, you know, move.? And it?s hard not to at least wonder whether Khan?s response is aimed to provoking a fight that eventually would give him the ability to, you know, move.

In the interim, we?ll track down a copy of the lease and try to make sense of who?s right and who?s wrong.? There doesn?t seem to be much middle ground on this one ? either the Jaguars? actions complied with the lease, or they didn?t.

It feels like something bigger is happening here, but it?s hard to imagine the lease disintegrating simply because the Jaguars recommended the hiring of a facilities manager.? Even if the action constitutes a violation of the lease, it doesn?t seem like the kind of thing that could result in the lease imploding and the Jaguars relocating.

Why Mitt Romney only does Fox News interviews: 5 theories

CBS News' Bob Schieffer wants to know why Romney is largely ignoring other networks. Here, some explanations

The only Sunday morning talk show Mitt Romney has appeared on this election season is Fox News Sunday, and the other networks are annoyed that the Republican presidential candidate is ignoring their invitations. "I know he does Fox," Bob Schieffer?said to senior Romney adviser Ed Gillespie?on CBS's Face the Nation?this weekend, "but we'd love to have him some time, as would?Meet the Press?and the ABC folk, I would guess." Gillespie replied: "We're going to take our message to the American people," Gillespie replied. "You saw him talking to schoolchildren last week." And it's not just the Sunday shows?Romney is avoiding. Aside from two sit-downs alongside his wife, Ann ? on CBS and ABC ? and appearances on CNBC and CNN, Romney has only talked with Fox News since securing the GOP nod nearly two months ago. Why is Romney sticking with the "fair and balanced" network?

1. He only wants softball questions
Romney is following the lead of other conservative Republicans, says Joe Gandelman at The Moderate Voice, "using Fox News as a way to avoid having to answer those pesky, non?public relations, non-softball questions and follow-up questions that he'd get on CBS, NBC, ABC." Much like Sarah Palin, he has "had a hard time in other interviews beyond Fox," says Ron Chusid in Liberal Values. Romney doesn't like to get into specifics on his secret plan for the economy, or why his Bain Capital record is an asset, and heaven forbid "clips of his past statements were brought up."

SEE MORE: 3 ways Mitt Romney can beat back attacks on Bain

2. Romney learned his lesson from the primaries
Sticking with Fox is a deliberate strategy by Team Romney "to limit national media exposure this time around," says Michael Calderone at The Huffington Post. Romney did the Sunday shows and magazine profiles in 2008, and his GOP rivals "made the weekend rounds" this year, and how well did any of that work out? After the contentious primary, Romney has "benefited from learning the importance of hammering home a singular message on safe turf," says Justin Sink at The Hill.?

3. He's still shoring up his right flank
Team Romney is working hard to strengthen its bridges to the Right, and Fox News is just part of that strategy, says Calderone at The Huffington Post. Along with his two appearances on Fox News Sunday, the former Massachusetts governor recently held an off-the-record meeting with "dozens of conservative columnists, reporters, and bloggers," followed by interviews last week with two of the sites represented at the meeting, Hot Air and Townhall. One attendee at the private sit-down said Romney's message to conservatives is "we want you on our side and working with the campaign."?

SEE MORE: Romney's 'Day One': Does his first ad set him apart from Obama?

4. He has no reason not to stick with Fox
Appearing on Fox News gives Romney a lot of advantages, says The Moderate Voice's Gandelman. Like other Republican candidates, he is almost guaranteed as much air time as he wants, "where the candidate can regurgitate talking points," in front of huge amounts of friendly voters. Plus, if he makes a verbal misstep, "more likely than not his interviewer would gloss over the gaffe, try to discreetly explain it away, and re-ask the question." It's smart PR, and today, unlike a decade ago, "Romney can get away with it."

5. He's getting bad advice
Can you really "run for the presidency more or less exclusively through Fox News?" says Richard K. Barry at Lippmann's Ghost. Maybe: After all, the only people who really pay attention to public affairs programs are political junkies and reporters. But "I think it is foolish to try." Not only is it risky to alienate reporters who help shape the campaign narrative, but I doubt ignoring the press "plays well with the mainstream of the country, the kind of people you need to vote for you outside your conservative base if you hope to win the presidency."

Auto Repair Franchises: Why Opening a Quality Auto Repair ...

An auto repair business offers a superb opportunity for you to earn income. Once you have experience in the automotive industry, you simply need to apply good management tactics and supply reliable consumer service to guarantee a successful business. When you have the talent for car repairs, you should consider opening up your own automobile repair shop. You will enjoy the freedom of being your own boss, and you can even set up your shop in your garage if you?ve got space for it. This lucrative business is also rewarding because you?ll be helping people in a distinct way by clearing up their vehicle problems. Those who can?t afford to buy a new vehicle will rely on your expertise in car repair to make their car run as new.

It may be challenging to start an auto repair shop because of various competitors in the same city or neighborhood. However, you can make your shop stand out by making it the best among the other shops in the area. A great auto repair business is made up of expert and highly-skilled mechanics. If you plan to hire a crew, make sure that you check their references and training. You can only provide the best services when your team knows how to identify and solve any automotive issue they are faced with.

You must also invest in top quality equipment and tools for the most effective and efficient automotive repair. Most auto service stations offer auto check-up services that can help many vehicle owners. You need to consider offering these services free of charge, so that you can gain maximum consumer satisfaction. Commercial-grade equipment may be costly ; however, you can have a good investment return when you obtain a large customer base by providing professional services.

Almost every day, you see some vehicles pulled over on the side of the road and towed away because of a mechanical problem. Quite frequently, owners of these towed vehicles wish to get services from an automobile repair center close by. They can expect efficient diagnosis and repair for their vehicle when they?re going to the nearest service station. In addition, they can rely on the expertise of auto mechanics that are prepared to offer competitive prices and exceptional quality service.

Many clients also choose to get repairs at an accessible repair shop. They look for repair facilities that are near their houses or offices, so they do not have to drive far. You need to ensure that you select a good location for your business, and advertise your shop in areas visited by vehicle owners. Since many individuals opt to take advantage of the services offered at car repair shops, you should try to maintain a solid reputation to your customers. You can gain loyal clients who will also recommend your services to their family and friends.

If you believe that an auto repair business is ideal for you, maybe you could opt to buy a quality auto service franchise. You can select from the various automotive franchise opportunities like body and paint, mufflers, tires, oil change franchises, and automobile repair. With a franchise business, you can expect quick success as a result of a proven business management plan. You will also find simplicity in marketing your company because it is well-known and established. Most critically, you can have continual support and training from the franchise owner. These benefits can help you manage and maintain the business effectively and efficiently.

Faith community & police partnership evolves

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- Richmond Police teaming with the faith community to provide services is a proven successful partnership.?Just this week the program took on a life of its own when faith leaders responded to a homicide on Barton Avenue.

Police Chief Bryan Norwood told NBC12 that response from faith leaders, without a direct invitation, is an exciting piece of the puzzle in terms of fighting crime in the city.?He called it an evolution of this partnership, which was started almost two years ago.

When police found Antoine Saunders shot to death on the sidewalk in broad daylight Tuesday, Pastor Alex Boyd and a handful of faith leaders also rushed to the north side scene to see if they could help Saunders' family and the community cope.

"It's a tragedy," Pastor Boyd told us.?"It's sad that the cream of our crop, our young men especially, are dying on the streets like this."

Police Chief Bryan Norwood told us Thursday, they've been talking about this kind of response for quite some time.

"The sense of urgency from the pastors that showed up and the sense of relief from the community who sought some interaction with those pastors was integral," he said.

It is a special kind of interaction.

"They bring a different level of relief to folks," Norwood explained.?"A uniform prohibits us from having a certain interaction with people. The faith leaders can bridge that gap and do so in a way that calms the neighborhood."

Initially, the Richmond Police Department focused its efforts where it said the need was the greatest.?Faith "walk-thrus" bring employment opportunities, school supplies, health screenings, literacy programs and familiarity to the city's courts.

"We're really investing in our trust account," Chief Norwood said.

He also believes sometimes residents feel more comfortable talking to faith leaders about patrol needs.?By doing that, the message gets passed along to police.

Now, the partners will revisit the courts and also expand to other neighborhoods in need.

"Every other institution has had a shot, right," Pastor Boyd asked.?"So now it's time for the church to step up and reach these young people before these tragedies happen."

If your faith organization wants to partner police or if you'd like them to visit your neighborhood, Chief Norwood said they're accepting all faiths and all requests.?Just contact headquarters.

Islamist and ex-PM vie for mantle of Egypt's revolt

CAIRO (Reuters) - The Muslim Brotherhood and a military man close to ousted leader Hosni Mubarak courted defeated first-round candidates in Egypt's presidential election on Saturday, each trying to claim the mantle of the uprising before a run-off next month.

State television said the Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi led this week's vote with 26.4 percent, against 23 percent for ex-air force chief Ahmed Shafiq, according to preliminary results.

Hamdeen Sabahy, a secular leftist came a close third with 21.5 percent, followed by independent Islamist Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh. Only the top two go to the deciding vote on June 16 and 17. Official first-round results are expected on Tuesday.

But Sabahy's lawyer said he would demand that the electoral committee halt the election until alleged voting irregularities had been investigated and until the constitutional court rules on whether Shafiq was legally eligible to stand.

"We have information that conscripts voted illegally," Sabahy told a raucous crowd of supporters outside his campaign headquarters late on Saturday. "We will not give up the rights of Egyptians."

The choice between Mursi and Shafiq, representing forces that have wrestled for the past six decades, has dismayed many Egyptians who voted for candidates offering a middle ground.

They fear a victory for the 70-year-old Shafiq, Mubarak's last prime minister, would snuff out hopes for change ignited by last year's uprising, while a win for Mursi would pitch Egypt into the uncertainties of experimenting with Islamic rule.

"Bread, freedom and social justice," cried the heaving crowd as Sabahy spoke and "The revolution is still on the street".

A young man kissed a baby held in its mother's arms and said: "The revolution was for you. We did it for you and we won't give it up easily".

The Brotherhood invited Sabahy, Abol Fotouh and other politicians for talks to canvas support before the runoff, but both Abol Fotouh and Sabahy made clear they would not attend.

Abol Fotouh, who had previously appeared to throw his weight behind the Brotherhood, to which he once belonged, said he would not start bargaining with the group over government positions.

"We seek to build a consensus that confronts the (Mubarak-era) remnants, but that also achieves the demands of the revolution and a project for a nation that accommodates all Egyptians with justice," he tweeted. "Clearly we will not be part of deals on distributing (government) posts."

A Brotherhood party official, Yasser Ali, had said the talks would discuss the vice presidency and a coalition government.

Warning of "determined efforts to recreate the old regime", the Brotherhood said parties that backed the anti-Mubarak revolt must unite "so that the revolution is not stolen from us".

The Brotherhood already holds the biggest bloc in parliament after an election completed in January, but has been unable to assert itself against an army-appointed interim government.

WHO STOLE THE REVOLUTION?

Shafiq used strikingly similar language at a news conference in which he addressed youth groups that spearheaded last year's revolt. For many, he represents everything they want changed.

"Your revolution was stolen," Shafiq told them. "I pledge to return its fruits to your hands."

He said "the clock cannot be turned back", but that he would not let Egypt "drown in chaos".

Much of his rhetoric indirectly targeted the Brotherhood, playing on fears among Egypt's minority Christians and secular liberals that a Mursi presidency would threaten their freedoms.

"No exclusion of anyone or distancing of anyone," Shafiq declared. "Everyone has a right to be a part of this nation."

On Friday he told Egyptian television he saw no problem with the idea of a Muslim Brotherhood-led government if he were elected president.

The generals who took over when Mubarak quit on February 11, 2011, have promised to make way for a new president by July 1, formally ending a messy and often bloody political transition.

But the military, the source of all Egypt's past presidents, is keen to keep its privileges and influence, preferably enshrined in a new constitution. Political wrangling has held up the drafting process, so the next president will take office not knowing his powers or those of parliament and government.

Shafiq has won support among Egyptians who see him as the kind of strongman they feel the country needs to end 15 months of political instability, economic failure and rising crime.

Although Mursi topped the poll, his score was unimpressive compared to the Brotherhood's performance in the parliamentary election in which it gained nearly half the seats.

WOOING RIVALS

Reform-minded independents such as Abol Fotouh and Sabahy between them won more votes than either Shafiq or Mursi, hinting at the growth of a new centre in Egypt's fluid political scene.

"The Brotherhood will have to reach out in a grand and dramatic way to the centre and the other political parties if they have any hope of winning their support and any hope of winning the presidency," said Elijah Zarwan of the European Council on Foreign Relations think-tank.

Some of the potential partners in an anti-Shafiq front will demand a political price.

The secular Justice Party, formed after last year's uprising, expressed "deep sorrow" at the result and set tough terms for the Brotherhood to win its support in the run-off.

It demanded a presidential system, whereas the Brotherhood favors a stronger parliament, called for a secular vice-president and said the Islamist movement must formally register itself for the first time in its 84-year-old history.

Long a thorn in Mubarak's side, the Brotherhood has looked increasingly isolated from other parties since his fall, first facing accusations it was slow to join the revolt and then that it acquiesced in the military rule that followed.

Trust in the Brotherhood eroded further when it reversed a pledge to stay out of the presidential race. The group, founded in 1928, says it is the target of a smear campaign.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, whose Carter Center was among several foreign and local organizations that monitored the first-round vote, said procedures appeared to have been fair.

"I have confidence in this process, despite the fact that it's been confused on occasion," he told a news conference.

However, the Center's preliminary report noted some procedural irregularities and lack of secrecy for voters in some polling stations.

"The election authorities prohibited access (for monitors) to the final aggregation of national results, undermining the overall transparency of the process," it added.

We're Always Fighting | Relationship Rewind

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

If things aren?t working in your relationship and you?re always fighting with one another, life can be stressful. These four tips will help you lose the screaming and get rid of the silent treatment.

#1. Learn to control your temper

Your relationship can be stronger and more successful if you are able to control your temper. Learn more positive ways of reacting and responding to stress and disagreements ?with your girl.

#2. Talk about what?s wrong

Instead of withdrawing or lashing out, stay calm. Sit down and talk about what?s bothering you. Make sure that each person has the time to be there. Be honest. Expect honesty from her.

#3. Try to see her side

If you start the talk and you?re only looking for her to apologize, then you?ve missed the point. Listen to what she?s saying. Apologize if you need to. Explain where you?re coming from, but try to figure out where she?s coming from as well.

#4. Seek counseling if necessary

If marriage or relationship counseling is necessary, then do it. You?ll know if you need it by paying attention to how often you have arguments and how successful your attempts to resolve it are. When both of you cannot sit down together and talk through things, then you?ll know that it?s gone too far. You can learn how to resolve things on your own and there isn?t any shame in asking for help by reaching out to a relationship counseling professional. However, if you are able to resolve things on your own, that?s okay too. Just be honest when you look at your communication strategies and the way the two of you resolve things.

With these tips put into play, you?ll find that you have less arguments and that when you do they can be easily resolved. Conflict resolution and communication are two of the most important skills in all relationships, not just romantic relationships.

Fielder's 4-hit game lifts Tigers over Twins

By JON KRAWCZYNSKI

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:18 p.m. ET May 26, 2012

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Max Scherzer struck out nine in a rain-shortened outing and Prince Fielder had his first four-hit game with the Tigers, leading Detroit to a 6-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday.

Scherzer (4-3) gave up three runs and six hits in 5 1-3 innings before leaving due to a rain delay and Andy Dirks had two doubles and two RBIs for the Tigers. Miguel Cabrera added two hits and two RBIs and Jose Valverde picked up his eighth save in 10 chances.

Carl Pavano (2-4) allowed six runs on 10 hits in 4 1-3 innings for the Twins, who have lost four straight. Justin Morneau and Denard Span homered for Minnesota, but the Twins struck out 16 times.

Slumping Twins slugger Josh Willingham struck out four times and the bottom four hitters in the lineup - Brian Dozier, Alexi Casilla, Drew Butera and Jamey Carroll - went 1 for 14 with 10 strikeouts.

Most of those strikeouts came courtesy of Scherzer, who is looking more and more like the capable sidekick to Justin Verlander he was last year. He fanned four in a row and five of six at one point in the outing, and set down 13 straight after giving up a solo homer to Morneau in the second inning.

The right-hander gave up seven runs in 2 2-3 innings in his first start of the season and has been trying to dig out of that hole ever since. He was tagged for five runs in a win over the White Sox on May 15, but has chewed up two struggling offenses in his last two starts.

Scherzer struck out 15 in a win over the Pirates last week, the most by a Tigers pitcher since Mickey Lolich in 1972. He fanned nine more on Saturday, getting Dozier and Butera twice each before a couple of hits, and a lot of rain, brought an end to his day in the sixth inning.

The game started 20 minutes behind schedule because of weather, and was delayed another 42 minutes in the sixth inning when a heavy downpour pelted Target Field.

Octavio Dotel took the mound after the delay and wiggled out of a runners-on-the-corners, one-out jam by striking out Willingham and getting Morneau to pop out to third base.

The Tigers jumped on Pavano in the first, getting an RBI double from Cabrera and an RBI single from Fielder to take a quick 2-0 lead. The veteran right-hander, who has been pitching through some soreness in his shoulder, seemed to steady himself in the next three innings, allowing only one hit.

But the powerful Tigers put together six straight hits during their four-run fifth, with Dirks delivering a two-run double and Cabrera an RBI single to make it 6-2.

Span homered in the sixth, and the Twins had the tying runner at the plate with one out in the eighth. But Joaquin Benoit struck out Joe Mauer and Willingham to keep the Tigers comfortably in front.

NOTES: Tigers SS Jhonny Peralta snapped an 0-for-17 skid with a single in the sixth. ... Twins RHP Nick Blackburn (quad) threw a bullpen on Saturday and will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday. ... Twins RHP Scott Baker, on the DL with Tommy John surgery, and his wife welcomed Annalee Baker into the world on Thursday night. ... RHP P.J. Walters (2-1, 2.95), who has helped the Twins' beleaguered rotation immensely since being called up from Triple-A Rochester, will start Game 3 of the series on Sunday against Detroit's Rick Porcello (3-4, 5.29). Porcello has given up 10 earned runs in his last three outings.

(AP) ? A top Iranian nuclear negotiator said traces of enriched uranium discovered at an underground bunker came from a "routine technical issue," the country's official IRNA news agency reported on Saturday.

Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Tehran's envoy to the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency, was responding to a report by the nuclear watchdog in which it said it had found radioactive traces at an Iranian site.

The uranium found was at level that is slightly closer to the threshold needed to arm nuclear missiles than Iran's previous highest-known enrichment grade.

The IAEA said Friday in the report that it was asking Tehran for a full explanation about the traces. But the report was careful to avoid any suggestion that Iran was intentionally increasing the level of its uranium enrichment.

Iran said the find was a technical glitch, according to the report. Analysts and diplomats said Iran's version sounded plausible.

Soltanieh said the issue was blown out of proportion for political reasons.

"This issue shows that some intend to damage the existing constructive cooperation between Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency," he was quoted as saying.

The West suspects Iran is pursuing a weapons program. Tehran denies the charge, saying its nuclear program is aimed at peaceful purposes like power generation and cancer treatment.
