PayDragon May Be The Easiest Way To Order Food On Your Phone

IMG_0439A new iPhone and Android app called PayDragon is trying to bring the one-click shopping experience to buying meals on your phone. The app was created by Paperlinks, a Y Combinator-backed startup that helps businesses create QR code-enabled materials. CEO Hamilton Chan demonstrated PayDragon for me last week, and it sounds like a great fit for anyone who's trying to grab lunch or dinner while they're busy working. Each restaurant has only four to six items on its PayDragon menu, usually its most popular dishes in combo meal form. You tap on the item you want, hit pay, and the order is complete. Then you just wait for the alert saying that your food is ready and head to the restaurant to pick it up.

LG Optimus 3D Max wages dual-core war in benchmark tests

LG Optimus 3D Max wages a dual-core war in benchmark tests
A mere day has passed since we stumbled upon initial benchmarks for the Optimus 4X HD, and now, yet another LG smartphone has tossed its hat into the arena. In the Optimus 3D Max's arsenal is a dual-core 1.2GHz CPU, which is part of the TI OMAP 4430 SoC. Today, we pitted it against two dual-core contemporaries from HTC and Samsung -- namely, the One S and Galaxy S Blaze 4G. Sadly, the Optimus 3D Max failed to put up much of a resistance to either smartphone, and while its scores remain unofficial, its plainly obvious that this LG will look sorely dated upon its arrival. You can see how it all unfolded just after the break.

[Thanks, Konstantinos]

Vodafone UK Galaxy S II ICS update postponed, now expected tomorrow

Galaxy S II

Despite earlier reports that it'd be landing sometime today, there's been no sign of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for Vodafone UK-branded Galaxy S II phones. The update, which first hit unbranded phones in Korea in mid-March, is now expected to arrive through Samsung's Kies software tomorrow, and in an OTA next Tuesday, April 17.

Voda pointed the finger at Samsung in a statement released today to explain the latest delays --

Unfortunately Samsung have told us this morning that they are unable to make the update available to you as planned.

The new plan from Samsung is that the update will be available via KIES tomorrow, 13th April, and via Over The Air update on Tuesday 17th April. If this moves at all, we’ll of course let you know.

I know a lot of you, like us, will be disappointed at this last minute change of plan and we continue to challenge Samsung to make this available to you as quickly as possible.

The Ice Cream Sandwich roll-out for Galaxy S II phones in the UK has been anything but smooth. Three and O2 customers got the update pretty swiftly, but other networks have dragged their heals.

Surprisingly, owners of unlocked devices, usually first with updates, have been left to languish on Gingerbread while network-branded phones get the new software through Kies. Once the Vodafone update's out of the way, hopefully Samsung will be able to push out ICS to long-suffering unbranded customers.

iPod video used to encourage organ donation

(Reuters Health) - An organ donation video people can watch on an iPod while they wait at the Department of Motor Vehicles may encourage more to become donors, a new study suggests.

Researchers found that for folks getting a driver's license in their county, the iPod video seemed to sway the decision on becoming an organ donor.

Of people who saw it, 84 percent consented to be a donor, versus 72 percent of those who didn't watch the video.

The effect was larger among African Americans: 76 percent of those who saw the video became organ donors, compared with just 54 percent of those who did not.

The findings, reported in the Annals of Internal Medicine, point to one potential fix for a well-known problem: the need for donor organs far exceeds the supply.

In the U.S., the gap between organ demand and supply is particularly large among minorities.

"One reason is that the need for donor organs is so great," said Dr. J. Daryl Thornton of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, the lead researcher on the new study.

Minorities, and African Americans in particular, have higher rates of health conditions that can necessitate a new organ ? to replace a kidney damaged by high blood pressure or diabetes, for example.

African Americans are three times more likely than whites to develop kidney disease, and they account for one-third of the waiting list for donor kidneys.

Add to that the fact that not enough people consent to be organ donors. Surveys have pointed to some reasons: many people are unaware of the acute need for donor organs; others mistrust the medical establishment and think they won't get life-saving measures if doctors know they are a donor. Some people think their religion disapproves of organ donation, though most have no rules against it.

There have been some efforts, such as billboards and radio spots, to educate people about organ donation. But they haven't met with much success, Thornton told Reuters Health.

He and his colleagues thought a timely video ? shown at the DMV, right before people are asked to become donors ? might work better.

"Video has the ability to capture people on so many different levels," Thornton said.

The researchers' video featured an ethnically diverse group of "real" people -- organ donors and recipients, family members of recipients and family of people who died waiting for an organ.

They all talked about what organ donation meant to them, Thornton said. And the discussion hit on common obstacles to people's willingness to become donors ? like mistrust of doctors and religious views on organ donation.

Thornton's team tested the five-minute video at 12 Cleveland-area DMVs, with two days spent at each location. Half of each day was designated as the "intervention" period (license-seekers watched the video on an iPod), and the other half was the "control" period (no one saw the video).

Overall, 443 people saw the video and 84 percent of them agreed to become organ donors. That compared with 72 percent of the 509 people who did not see the video.

About 20 percent of all study participants were African American. And the video seemed especially influential for them. It raised their consent rate by 22 percentage points, versus 11 percentage points among white license-seekers.

CHANGING VIEWS

Thornton's team also found that people's attitudes shifted after seeing the video. They felt more knowledgeable about organ donation and had fewer "conflicts" about it than their counterparts who had not seen the video.

That runs counter to the conventional wisdom that it's hard to change people's views on organ donation, according to Thornton.

"We just have to present the information in a way that's accessible to people," he said.

As for the practicality of the video, Thornton said, "one of the great things is that it's inexpensive."

In theory, DMVs anywhere could run the video ? and not necessarily via iPod, according to Thornton.

He said it could be shown on existing DMV TV screens, though it's not clear if that would be as effective as the iPod viewing.

Even if iPods were needed, Thornton said, they are "fairly inexpensive now," and DMVs should be able to buy a few. The models used in this study run between $200 and $300.

"I don't think this would be hard for any state to implement," Thornton said. He added that his team is currently working with Ohio to get the video into the rest of the state's DMV locations.

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

A big question is still whether any increase in organ-donor consent will ultimately mean a bigger donor-organ supply. "A lot of things happen between consent and donation," Thornton said.

A common scenario, he noted, is that an organ donor dies of a cause that prevents any tissue from being harvested.

In the U.S., more than 100,000 people are on the active waiting list for an organ transplant. But fewer than 30,000 transplants are performed each year, Thornton's team notes in the report.

Minorities make up half of that waiting list, but only account for 30 percent of donors.

That 30 percent does match the proportion of minorities in the U.S. population as a whole. But ideally, experts would like to see more minority donors. Because transplants have a greater chance of success when the donor and recipient are as genetically similar as possible, it's preferable to match people of the same race and ethnicity.

In the first ruling of its kind in the United States, Maryland's General Assembly passed a bill prohibiting employers from demanding employee user names and passwords to Facebook and other social networks, the Baltimore Sun reports. It currently awaits Gov. Martin O'Malley's signature.?

"We are proud of Maryland for standing up for the online privacy of employees and the friends and family members they stay in touch with online," Melissa Goemann, legislative director of ACLU of Maryland, said in a statement. "Our state has trail-blazed a new frontier in protecting freedom of expression in the digital age, and has created a model for other states to follow."

Employers and colleges demanding Facebook passwords or other inappropriate access to social network profiles gained national attention last month after Bob Sullivan of msnbc.com's Red Tape Chronicles first broke the story of this not uncommon practice. Since then, representatives in several states have been making noise about legislation similar to Maryland's bill.?

The ACLU got the ball rolling a year prior, when?the ACLU state chapter posted a YouTube video?featuring the personal account by Robert Collins, who was asked to hand over his password by his employer, the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS), and was told this was standard procedure. Following the viral video stink, the DPSC dropped the practice, but the ACLU didn't drop the subject.?

"I am excited to know that our esteemed policymakers in Maryland found it important to protect the privacy of Maryland's citizens,"?Collins said in a statement?after the bill passed?unanimously?in the state Senate and by a wide margin in Congress. "I believe privacy should not be an alternative in lieu of securing employment, but a fundamental right."?

In March, two U.S. senators asked federal agencies to look into whether employers and colleges that are asking for access to individual Facebook profiles are breaking the law. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., made the request along with Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., who said he's writing legislation that would outlaw employers from requesting Facebook passwords.

Erin Egan, Facebook's chief privacy officer on policy, recently decried ?the practice of employers asking for access to Facebook accounts. She went on to say that such requests are a direct violation of Facebook's terms of service and "it also potentially exposes the employer who seeks this access to unanticipated legal liability."?

Helen A.S. Popkin goes blah blah blah about online privacy, then asks you to join her on?Twitter?and/or?Facebook. Also,?Google+.?Because that's how she rolls.

Content Strategy Falls Short Of Addressing The Real Problems: An ...

In our latest installment of The Content Wrangler Interviews we chat with freelance writer Barbara Saunders about content strategy, content ?screen shots?, and why she has some problems with the idea that content assets can be improved by better management. As usual, we?d love to know what you think. Give it a quick read, then share your views in the comments section.

TCW: Hey, Barbara. Thanks for spending some time with us today. Tell us a little about yourself and what you do for a living.

BS: I?m a creative writer with a commercial practice. I write, edit, and teach effective writing practices.

TCW: You?ve been working in marketing and PR communications. What got you interested in content strategy?

BS: I began my career as production editor at a software company. For many years, I cobbled together a work life including editorial positions, freelance journalism, and direct client service like coaching, fitness training, and youth development. I?m a typical creative-writer type, in that way ? curious about different worlds. I ended up as an analyst at a company that used a natural language search tool to manage corporate records for litigation, compliance, and governance. There I was exposed to ontologies, taxonomies, tagging, and the basics of how search engines work. I was intrigued by the idea of applying these techniques to other editorial projects in businesses.

TCW: How did that change the way you approach your work and your career?

BS: Attending the Intelligent Content Conference in 2011 was my way to learn more about this new domain. The conference fired me up. I bought (and read) a textbook about XML. I started exploring technical writing gigs. I applied some of the ?intelligence? frameworks I?d learned to my work in marketing communications. With my clients, I don?t have a say about tools; I send them text in Microsoft Word ? or even email. What I was best able to transfer from the content strategy world was introducing the idea of a comprehensive planning to create, store, and organize modular chunks of content that will be used for different customers and through different delivery mechanisms.

TCW: Do you identify now as a content strategist?

BS: Yes, I do. Before I could take on the title, though, I had to work through a nagging dilemma. As I sat through the sessions at Intelligent Content Conference this past February (2012), I became more and more uncomfortable with the idea of content as foremost an asset that can be improved by better management. Before it has value as an asset, content has to be a functional vessel for the ideas it intends to communicate. Most of the poor content I encounter as a customer fails that basic test. No amount of organization after the fact can fix that. There still seems to be a gap between content strategy and how creating happens. I came to the conclusion that, most of those reasons have to do with expecting business people to stand in for professional writers and training writers to think like business managers. This stands in really stark contrast to the way businesses treat visual designers and engineers.

TCW: Can you tell me more about the distinction, and why you think it?s important?

BS: Successful writers combine the visual artist?s ability to evoke sensory experience with the engineer?s ability to generate models. People with managerial talents and preferences (though they may also be good writers) tend to use verbal communication as an adjunct or extension to speaking and relating in real time. That?s why I think writers are being pushed to be more ?conversational? and to integrate their verbal skills deeper into the workflow and collaboration processes. As a result, their social impulses are redirected from the reader to the work group ? often to the detriment of both the content creation process and its product.

TCW: Can you give me some examples?

BS: Like technical writers everywhere, I get a lot of raw content that doesn?t follow ?basic? rules. For example, when writing a manual or documenting an application procedure, I wondered, why do my content authors so consistently make the error of writing a single, ordinal list that mixes steps the customer must take with steps the company would take in response? What the reader needs to know is ?what I need to do.? The authors write ?a list the things that have to happen, in order.? The problem is not a failure to know the rules; it?s a misplaced orientation.

When we learn to write in school, we write to show the teacher that we?ve grasped the material. So we get into the habit of taking a ?screen capture? of what?s in our heads and shoving it into a form. A lot of ineffective business writing reflects that. Jargon, unexplained acronyms, and industry or company insider talk accurately capture thought. Customers? Last week, my client?s customer wrote in an email string, ?Please tell me what XYZ, ABC, and DEF stand for. Us cave folk no understand.? Not good!

Often, my greatest value in the process is precisely that I am removed enough from the corporate team that I have the same perspective as the reader.

TCW: How does the direction content strategy is taking fall short of addressing this problem?

BS: I keep hearing about creating content that can be read by people and machines. But content needs to be sensible as well as comprehensible. That usually takes more solitary work than is fashionable these days. The standard procedure is to start the ?writing? process way too early in the thinking process. At a large software company where I worked, one manager stated that he expected white papers to go through twenty or thirty drafts. Dozens of people paid hundreds of dollars a day formatted charts that would later be cut, polished paragraphs that would later be deemed irrelevant to the core messages, or tinkered with templates that could not serve the logical structure of the document.

The company was attempting to craft an ambitious service to let customers get specific business problems in front of product designers. Team members on site with customers would record findings in a document; my deliverable was a polished version. I was surprised at the questions I couldn?t get answers to: how people would access the document, who the audience was, and how they would use it. Eventually I learned that the intention was to put together a ?well-written? data dump from which customer representatives, field consultants, and internal engineers were supposed to extract both meaning and purpose. This approach violates the basic covenant of writing, though.

The way I see my job as a writer, the heavy lifting for making sense of the material is mine, not the readers?.

TCW: That?s a great point. It is our responsibility. Far too many times we forget this. Well, although I could talk with you about these topics for hours, it looks like we?re out of time. Thanks for sharing a little bit about yourself with our readers. I really appreciate it.

BS: Thank you for inviting me.

Editor?s Note: If you?re looking to learn more about content strategy, consider attending The Content Strategy Workshop, brought to you by The Content Wrangler and Intentional Design, October 9-10, 2012 in Portland, Oregon. Bodyweight Exercises- Lightning Speed Fitness Program | Health ...

Bodyweight Exercises- Lightning Speed Fitness ProgramLet me show you show you a "fast-as-LIGHTNING" way I discovered to melt excess whale blubber, double your energy levels, get pro-athlete fitness and real world or "useable" strength with easy to do 1 to 5 minute "Mini-Workouts."

Who?s got time to waste driving to a gym and then doing 45-minutes to an hour of aerobics or cardio when you could be doing short workouts at home that burn the blubber much more effectively?

Unfortunately millions of obese people are still overweight due to horribly ignorant fitness and dietary advice given by many certified personal trainers around the United States. Good thing I?m not a certified personal trainer, it allows me to think outside the box and not be brainwashed by the orthodoxy.

If you?re doing, one and even two-hour long aerobics sessions to lose weight, you?re absolutely wasting your time and for many people, actually training your body to keep the fat on much in the same way that yo-yo dieting works.

There?s a much faster, better and cheaper way to get fit and melt the body butter once and for all. No more gyms, weights or fancy shmancy exercise equipment needed ever again. In fact, you?re about to discover one of my complete fat burning workouts that lasts a total of five minutes.

Actually, another one of my total body workouts lasts only four minutes and yet even well conditioned athletes have a hard time finishing it.

Don?t worry; you can build up to it gradually over time or modify the intensity to suit your needs. What I?m about to show you is for people of all ages and fitness levels from newbie to pro-athlete level.

Workouts very similar to my own have been scientifically proven to effectively burn up to 9 times more fat per calorie burned than traditional, long slow and boring aerobic exercise sessions.

Yet most certified personal trainers will tell you that you have to do long aerobic sessions lasting an hour or longer to lose weight. They say this because slower activity levels have been proven to burn fat as the primary fuel instead of carbohydrates.

While you are burning fat, this method of exercise also teaches your body to store fat. So while you burn it off initially, your internal fat thermostat remains at a high setting and you end up putting the fat right back on when you eat.

Why does the body do this? Because it needs the extra fat since your doing exercises that rely on fat for the majority of the fuel.

What you need is a system that sets your body?s fat thermostat to low and can help you get pro-athlete conditioning in a third of the time of traditional aerobics.

And wouldn?t it be great if you didn?t need any equipment and could do many of these exercises even while you?re at work, at home, travelling or just about anywhere?

One of the secrets is my discovery of two time-saving "multi-muscle" exercises, that grow 95% of the major muscles in your body. But there?s much more to it than that.

I?ll Bet You $20.00 I Can Improve Your Fitness Without Weights, Gyms or Bulky Exercise Equipment in 15-Minutes A Day Or Less?

(I?ll explain the exact details in just a minute. But first I?d like to share a quick story with you?)

I?m blown away by how fast I am on the tennis courts these days. I feel like someone operated on me and replaced my old legs with bionic, super-athlete legs. My legs seem like they are made of steel and yet feel light as a feather. They have so much power, bounce and resiliency in them. I feel like sprinting all day long.

I?m in my 40?s but I am running faster than I did in my senior year in high school. It seems like I am running down tennis balls as fast as Andre Agassi. Not only that but I can stop on a dime and quickly change direction.

I?ve also noticed that I can jump higher than in recent years and my agility and balance have improved as well. I?m getting these and many other amazing benefits by doing just one simple exercise only 5-minutes per day.

Don?t get me wrong, although this is an easy exercise to learn, it doesn?t mean you won?t be working hard and breathing deeply. However, you?ll love it and feel a sense of accomplishment.

You also get a natural high from an exercise that takes only 5 to minutes to do. You can of course, spend more or less time depending on your goals and fitness level.

This exercise is easy enough for any beginner to learn and use but powerful enough for world class athletes to get amazing fitness and health results. I teach all of my tennis students how to do this exercise in less than 2 minutes.

It doesn?t matter how uncoordinated or un-athletic they are and trust me I?ve had some very uncoordinated tennis students.

It?s really easy to learn for anyone regardless of your current fitness level. But don?t let the simplicity fool you. The results are powerful. You?ll totally transform your body from the comfort of your own home. In fact, this is a go anywhere and do anytime kind of exercise.

I didn?t believe it to be true that you could get in fantastic shape with just bodyweight exercises alone?I was wrong! I was in absolute terrible shape, weighing over 200 lbs and flabby.

I now weight 185 and am really seeing positive muscle growth and strength all over, and lets not forget the weight loss and ab strength I?ve gained!

Roger, I?m going on three weeks now with your exercise program and I feel great. It?s just what I needed for an exercise routine. It?s fast, it?s quick and I feel and see the results already. No gyms, no traveling, just exercising when and where I feel like it! It is definitely the piece of the puzzle that I was missing! Respectfully Yours, Ken Bateman Read more?

San Gabriel Valley homeowners swarm to meeting about citrus disease

Area homeowners are responding to agricultural officials' call to action to help save the state's $2-billion citrus industry and their beloved backyard trees from a bacterium that the Citrus Research Board has referred to as "a death sentence for California citrus."

About 100 worried homeowners buzzed with questions during an information session last week in the San Gabriel Valley. State agricultural inspectors have enacted a quarantine in a five-mile radius around the neighborhood where Huanglongbing, or yellow dragon disease, was first confirmed March 30 in a citrus tree in Hacienda Heights.

"It turns out I'm barely inside the quarantine boundary; I wanted to know whether I can continue to give out my fruit or not," said Don Winterstein, resident of Brea and longtime member of California Rare Fruit Growers. "Their answer was 'no way' ? but I can't object to that. It's a very serious problem. I just hope they do what's necessary to get rid of this thing."

There is no known cure for HLB, which attacks a tree's vascular system, causing misshapen, bitter fruit before killing the tree. It is carried by the Asian citrus psyllid, a gnat-size flying pest that first appeared on domestic fruit trees in California in 2008.

Inspectors have gone door-to-door collecting samples of the pest within a half-mile radius of the diseased tree. None have tested positive, state officials say, and the tree was removed Thursday and sent to a state lab for analysis and disposal. Citrus trees within this area will be sprayed with psyllid pesticides beginning this week, and inspectors will continue to monitor and routinely survey the area.

"What we really need is the assistance of the residents," said Los Angeles County Agricultural Commissioner Kurt E. Floren. "They grow their own fruit, they share buds amongst themselves ? and that can be a primary means of transferring the disease."

Floren, who said the quarantine will probably hold for at least two years, said similar information sessions for other eradication programs have had turnouts as small as eight people for the entire evening.

The community has been particularly responsive to HLB, wondering how to help prevent the spread of psyllids to other areas.

"I just don't want to see what happened in Florida happen here. Especially if it's because we moved too slow," said Jenifer Chungafung, a physician from Rowland Heights. "I have citrus trees, and my friend has a business up north. That would be his whole livelihood."

There are more than 285,000 acres of commercial citrus groves across California, the nation's second-largest citrus grower, behind Florida. HLB has wreaked havoc on the citrus industries in Florida and Brazil.

"It's nice they gave us these pictures," said Hacienda Heights resident Diane Kakimi, holding fliers with enlarged images of the pests and a hotline number. Kakimi has tended her four citrus trees for more than 20 years and planned to go home to inform her neighbors.

"I'm going back and taking a good careful look at my trees and the leaves," she said.

Those who believe they have spotted symptoms of HLB in local citrus trees are asked to call the California Department of Food and Agriculture's pest hotline, (800) 491-1899.

London, NYC top the cities favored by the ultra-rich

Suhaimi Abdullah / Getty Images

The Merlion, a symbol of Singapore, is lit up in front of the central business district. The city, one of the world's most competitive, also has the largest GDP per capita anywhere.

By Charles B. Stockdale, 24/7 Wall St.

The votes are in and London is the most important city in the world -- at least, according to the ultra-wealthy. The Wealth Report, a new study by Knight Frank Research and Citi Private Bank, breaks down the 10 international cities that high-net-worth individuals consider the most important. 24/7 Wall St. examined the list to identify what it is that makes these cities exceptional.

The report surveyed individuals worth more than $25 million in investable assets to find which cities impress them the most. The survey focused on several factors that can make cities important, including economic activity, political power, knowledge and influence and quality of life.

A number of cities on the list are traditional hubs for business. New York and London, which sit at the top of list, are considered global financial centers. They are also important to the wealthy for other reasons, including good markets for luxury housing, strong educational resources, social stability, economic openness and personal safety.

24/7 Wall St.: Cities where people can't afford to rent

The list also features cities in countries with emerging economies, although they generally rank lower than the established Western urban centers. Beijing and Shanghai, while already two economic powerhouses, are quickly becoming important and represent fierce competition for the old guard. In fact, a number of leading commentators believe Shanghai will be the most important city in 2050.

For each city among the top 10, 24/7 Wall St. included its estimated rank in 10 years. We included the average price of prime property for each city as well. Prime property is defined as ?a location?s most desirable, and usually most expensive, property,? the price of which often reflects demand among the world?s wealthiest individuals. We also included the population of each city?s metropolitan area, which includes surrounding suburbs, based on data from the United Nations. That the cities vary in size reflects the fact that what is important to the rich does not necessarily translate to universal popularity.

These are the most popular cities of the ultra-rich.

1. London

  • Estimated rank in 10 years:?1
  • Avg. prime property price:?$4,500/sq. ft. (3rd most)
  • Population:?8,631,325 (30th most)

London, which is one of the world?s top financial centers, is considered the most important city by high-net-worth individuals -- and by a significant margin. It ranks the highest in economic activity, knowledge and influence, and quality of life categories. It is second in political power, behind only Washington, D.C. The city has an abundant supply of luxury housing, top-tier educational opportunities and a large population of the ultra-wealthy -- all characteristics that appeal to the rich. Despite competition from emerging Asian nations, London is expected to maintain its top position for the next 10 years.

24/7 Wall St.: Highest-paid hosts on late-night TV

2. New York

  • Estimated rank in 10 years:?2
  • Avg. prime property price:?$2,200/sq. ft. (Manhattan) (17th most)
  • Population:?19,425,069 (New York-Newark) (6th most)

New York is ranked second in both the economic activity and knowledge and influence categories. It is ranked third in the quality of life and political power categories. In 10 years, the city is expected to remain as the second-most important city. David Adam, managing director at Global Cities, notes in The Wealth Report that New York?s ability to attract a significant foreign workforce will keep it on top.

3. Hong Kong

  • Estimated rank in 10 years:?6
  • Avg. prime property price:?$4,400/sq. ft. (4th most)
  • Population:?7,069,378 (38th most)

Hong Kong is seen as one of the world?s most important economic centers. At $45,301, it has the world?s fourth-largest GDP per capita and is expected to have the second-largest GDP per capita by 2050. Hong Kong is also very highly rated in the quality of life and knowledge and influence categories. The average price per square foot in the city is the fourth-highest for houses and the 10th-highest for apartments.

4. Paris

  • Estimated rank in 10 years:?7
  • Avg. prime property price:?$2,500/sq. ft. (11th most)
  • Population:?10,485,263 (21st most)

Paris performs fairly well in all leadership categories considered by The Wealth Report. The city also has the 11th-most expensive prime property values. According to the report, Paris has long been a popular center for real estate investments by foreigners. Since 2009, prime office rentals have increased by 17 percent. The city is also a major destination for business and tourism. In 10 years, however, the city is expected to fall behind Beijing, Shanghai and Singapore in importance.

24/7 Wall St.: Fast-food restaurants with the most unhealthy customers

5. Singapore

  • Estimated rank in 10 years:?5
  • Avg. prime property price:?$2,400/sq. ft. (13th most)
  • Population:?4,836,691 (60th most)

Singapore is considered to have the second-highest quality of life. It ranks fifth-highest in economic activity, eighth-highest in knowledge and influence and eleventh-highest in political power. Singapore also is listed among the cities growing fastest in importance. The city currently has the largest GDP per capita in the world at $56,532 per person. It is expected to maintain this position through 2050. According to data from the Economist Intelligence Unit, Singapore is one of the most competitive cities in the world, along with New York and London.

Nokia takes over Times Square for Lumia 900 launch event
We're still not exactly sure what Nicki Minaj has to do with Nokia's new Lumia 900, but the company put her at the center of its promotional efforts in a launch event Friday night that took over Times Square. Oh, you missed it? For just the visual effect of what went on, including CGI dancers on massive LED displays and coordinated effects on the tourist destination's many existing video boards (been there, done that) you can check out our gallery of pics from the event, or look below for the video. If you're all about the phones, Nokia is pushing its Windows Phone 7 flagship with new "the smartphone beta test is over" ads -- there's also one of those embedded after the break. So, is anyone concerned Nokia might not be doing enough to promote this new phone?
