The 'Choking Game': 1 in 7 College Kids Has Tried It (Time.com)
College students aren't necessarily renowned for their good judgment, and a new study reinforces that, finding that nearly one in seven co-eds has played the Choking Game, which is every bit as dangerous as it sounds.
Also called the Fainting Game, Pass Out, or Space Monkey, the Choking Game can be played individually or in groups. It consists of manually choking yourself or others, sticking a plastic bag over the head, tying a string around the neck or hyperventilating, all in search of a few seconds of euphoria. Researchers at The Crime Victims' Institute at Sam Houston State University surveyed 837 students at a Texas university and found that the behavior, which works by cutting off blood flow to the brain in order to induce a high, was frighteningly commonplace:
?16% of students said they'd played the game, and three-quarters more than once
?On average, students first played the game at age 14
?Males were more likely to have played than females
?90% of students who had played the game learned about it from friends, and most students said they first played in a group
Why in the world would kids engage in this potentially deadly behavior? In a word, curiosity. They may also not realize it has the potential to be just as deadly as illegal drugs. The good news is that learning that a number of teens and college students have suffocated to death from playing the Choking Game helped deter students from playing. Parents, talk to your kids. "This 'game,' as it is often called, does not require obtaining any drugs or alcohol, is free, and can go undetected by many parents, teachers, physicians, and other authority figures. Another class, known as Shred, will keep all its participants guessing what will come next. The class incorporates strengthening dumbbells, weight bars, resistance bands, partner work and stability balls to give students a workout they?ll never forget. Cycle class is one of the most intense classes. It focuses on hills, resistance and varying speeds. But come early, this class fills up to capacity fast. Cardio kickboxing, another tough class offered, is the ideal way to release tension. Kicking and punching out all that built-up frustration about upcoming midterms? Yes, please.
Campus Rec offers two specialty classes: Recreational Ballet and Aikido. Both classes require a slightly more expensive payment, but they?re well worth it. Aikido is a Japanese martial art that teaches self-defense. The instructor, Mick Chambers Sensei, is a fifth-degree black belt, meaning students learn from the best. Recreational Ballet is open to beginner and advanced dancers, and the class is designed to build confidence and concentration.
The fitness schedule has a class for just about everybody. Whether you?re looking for a laid-back stress reliever or a heart pumping weight manager, you?re in luck. Crime soars in Brazil's Bahia state as police strike -- Society's Child ...

Official figures suggest the murder rate has more than doubled in the state capital, Salvador, since police stopped work there on Tuesday.
The number of assaults and thefts has also risen compared to previous weeks.
Salvador, Brazil's third largest city, is one of the venues for the football World Cup in 2014.
Bahia Governor Jaques Wagner said the strike was illegal and accused some of the officers of violent tactics.
"A group of police using reprehensible methods, spreading fear among the population, caused disturbances in some parts of the state," Mr Wagner said.
The officers are demanding a 50% wage increase and better working conditions.
Soaring crime
According to the Bahia public security ministry, the murder rate in the state capital Salvador rose by 129%.
The ministry said 78 people were killed since the start of the strike on 31 of January, compared to 34 in the same time period the previous week.
Bahia state officials said one of the strike leaders was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of stealing public funds.
The officials said the arrest was related to the seizure by striking officers of more than a dozen police vehicles.
Arrest warrants have been issued for another 11 strike leaders.
Sixteen of the seized vehicles have now been recovered by the army.
The spike in violence comes as Salvador prepares for Carnival celebrations which are attended by tens of thousands of tourists every year.

Legal code for patent licence agreements | IP Draughts
The laws governing patent licensing transactions are patchy and confusing.? As far as IP Draughts is aware, no country has established a comprehensive legal code for such transactions, unlike the position for contracts for the sale of goods.? In the latter case, examples of a code include the UK?s Sale of Goods Act 1979, the USA?s Uniform Commercial Code (particularly Article 2) and the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods.? The European Commission is currently trying to introduce a Common European Sales Law.
In the absence of a code, when determining the rights and obligations of the parties to a patent licensing transaction, it is all the more important to define those rights and obligations in a detailed written agreement.? But not all transactions can justify the time and expense involved in preparing detailed written agreements that seek to address every legal eventuality.
Therefore, it will sometimes be necessary to fall back on general legal principles when considering the rights and obligations of the parties to a patent licence.? But what are those principles?? They may be a mixture of:
- special rules in patent legislation, eg provisions stating that patents may be licensed or assigned, or the requirement under UK patent law for a joint owner of a patent to obtain the consent of the other joint owner before licensing the patent.
- rules in general property laws, eg the principle of non-derogation from grant as articulated in the BL v Armstrong case, or the meaning of joint ownership and ownership in common, respectively.
- rules for contracts generally, eg the rules governing formation of a legally-binding contract, or the circumstances in which terms may be implied into a contract.
- case law on specific terms that have been implied into patent licence agreements, eg as to whether the licensor must sue infringers, or provide improvements, and whether the licensee must allow audits for the purpose of verifying whether the correct royalties have been paid.
Other areas of law may also affect the terms of patent licensing transactions, eg competition laws and tax.
A further complication is that these rules vary between countries.? For example, US patent law allows a joint owner to license without the consent of the other joint owner, unlike the position in the UK as mentioned above.? Another example is the question of whether a licensee is permitted to sub-license, in the absence of a specific right to do so in a written licence agreement; the answer to this question varies between countries and, in some countries (eg Germany), depends on whether the licensee has an exclusive or non-exclusive licence.? Many other examples of national variance could be given.? We discuss some of them in our book, Drafting Agreements in the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries (OUP, looseleaf, 2008 onwards), which has contributions from lawyers in 7 jurisdictions including the US, UK and Germany.
In IP Draughts? experience, most patent licence agreements are international in character, in that they involve parties based in different jurisdictions and/or a territory covering more than one jurisdiction.? It is unfortunate, to say the least, that the rules governing such transactions may vary depending on the law of the contract or the location of the patents.? Bearing in mind that we have managed to harmonise substantive patent law (eg among countries of the European Patent Convention) it is a shame that we haven?t yet managed to harmonise the rules governing the licensing of patents.
This theme is covered in considerably more detail in a chapter on patent licensing, written by IP Draughts, in a forthcoming book, a Research Handbook on Intellectual Property Licensing, edited by Professor de Werra of the University of Geneva and due to be published by Edward Elgar Publishing.
That chapter proposes a detailed code for patent licensing, which might be promulgated by a United Nations body such as WIPO.? Here are a few of the themes, in outline:
- The licensor warrants that he is entitled to grant the licence (either as owner or licensee) and will continue to be so entitled for the duration of the licence, except as disclosed in writing prior to entering into the licence agreement.
- The licensor must disclose to the licensee any claims made by a third party alleging that he has any rights in the licensed patents.
- Except as stated above, no warranties are implied into a patent licence agreement.
- The licensee may require his licence to be registered at national patent offices at his expense.? On termination of the licence, the licensee must cooperate with the licensor in cancelling the registration.
- Where a licence is registered, it is binding on subsequent owners of the licensed patents.
- A licence may be written or oral.
And so on.? People may disagree with individual provisions such as those stated above, but do readers think that it is desirable in principle to have a near-comprehensive set of rules, preferably the same set of rules in all major jurisdictions, governing patent licence agreements?
